Commando war stories in pictures published by D.C. Thomson & Co, were first released in 1961 with issue one: 'Walk or Die' this title was later released as issue 2523. Later the heading was changed to Commando for action and adventure.

All the titles were original up to issue 538, as issue 539 'Sniper's Island' was a reissue of issue 72. This started a new trend with previously published titles being reprinted.

Commando Comics are still issued, with issue 3400 released in January 2001. If the current publication run continues, then issue 4000 should be released around April 2007.

There were other similar publications printed, which were also aimed at the older reader with titles such as: Battle Picture Library, War Picture Library, Air Ace Picture Library etc.

War Picture Library were first released in 1960, with Battle Picture Library being released March 6^th 1975. Both were published by Fleetway.
