Didcot ensured their FA Cup campaign continued at
least to the weekend with a closely fought but ultimately deserved
2-0 victory over Andover on Tuesday evening in front of nearly 300
at the npower Loop Meadow.
The Hampshire opponents from the Wessex League
First division were never out of the game but in the end the
finishing made all the difference. Didcot forward Ian Concannon
netted two quality strikes whereas Andover created and squandered
several opportunities. The Railwaymen were soon on track, carving out
a goalscoring chance in the first minute. Stuart Beavon laid the
ball back to Darren Beckett, who sped forward as the Andover defence
opened up, only to fire straight at keeper Colin Hopkins.
Then, just as Andover began to get a foothold
into the game, Didcot struck. Concannon latched onto a through
ball but his initial failure to control the pass appeared to let in
Hopkins to snuff out the danger. Nevertheless, the Didcot striker
persisted and was rewarded with the ball running free off Hopkins
and defender Sam Rea, presenting him with a simple finish.
However, no sooner were Didcot celebrating taking
the lead when Beavon had to limp off and the setback seem to jolt
Andover into action. Midfielder Vince Rusher was allowed too
much room to attack the Didcot rearguard and keeper Chris Webb had
to be alert to block with Phil Andrews poised to pounce.
The teams then traded openings, an overhead kick
by Beckett helping set up a Concannon effort that was saved shortly
preceded a defensive error that allowed Andover’s David Asker to
clip the ball into space. Justin Bennett raced onto the ball
but his subsequent shot was parried by Webb and the Didcot keeper
just regathered ahead of the onrushing Andrews.
Andy Parrott then had a cheeky back header
smartly saved by Hopkins but a long ball then caught Didcot
flat-footed. However Webb was able to deny Bennett from
equalising by beating away his effort.
Didcot again started the brighter in the second
period, but Andover created the first worthwhile opportunities.
Following a corner, Rea and Andrews had goalbound efforts blocked
but not properly cleared, and Rusher again centred but Andrews found
the side-netting with his far post header.
Didcot desperately needed a two goal cushion and
after 57 minutes, they did score again. Parrott went on a
trademark surging run but Concannon still had much to do when he
received the ball on the left edge of the penalty area.
However, he produced an inch perfect chip over the stranded Hopkins
that dipped just under the bar for a breathtaking finish.
Didcot had several chances to increase their lead
further with Concannon and Danny Wise in particular going close.
However, as the clock began to wind down the game was becoming too
open for the Railwaymen’s liking and Andover began to sense a way
back into the match. Substitute Danny Lewis hammered a shot
that Webb could only deflect into the path of Andrews but the Didcot
custodian was able to block the Andover striker’s follow up with his
legs.
Andover’s frustration was now becoming apparent
with several niggling tackles and it culminated in Andrews aiming a
clear punch at Danny Campbell. The referee spotted the incident but
despite the Didcot crowd baying for a red card, he decided that a
stern lecture would suffice.
Andover missed their easiest chance of the match
deep into added time when Rusher had a clear opening from eight
yards but hit his shot too close to Webb.
The victory for Didcot means that the start of
their league programme is delayed until at least Bank Holiday
Monday. However, they do have Hellenic Premier Division
opponents in the next round of the FA Cup, as they face a tricky
trip to Carterton on Saturday.
Didcot: Webb; Goodall (Malone 72); Bedwell;
Campbell; Green; Parrott (McInnerney 88); Jack; Ward; Concannon;
Beavon (Wise 11); Beckett.
