Adventure Races are multi-sport events, which can include a variety of outdoor activities such as climbing, canoeing, trail and fell running, orienteering,night navigation and mountain biking.

Some events are timed from start to finish, with a set route to follow and dedicated transition areas, similar in format to a triathlon. Other events have an orienteering basis allowing competitors a set time for each stage, during which they try to visit as many controls as possible. Points will be deducted for lateness after each stage.

The ACE Race Series has a base camp area where competitors return to between stages, and are allowed a short amount of time to prepare for the next stage. Races such as The Western Isles Challenge have a clear objective some distance away from the start. Single day events will usualy start and finish at the same location.

This campsite soon filled up to standing room only ! Arriving at overnight camp early can pay divideds.. Elite, A, and Long Score Camp, KIMM, 1999.

A good, well organised support team may be required for certain races, whilst other organisers will expect competitors to be completely self-sufficient.
