WHALES OFF TO A FLYING START
KWSC KICK OFF THE SEASON RETAINING THE KENVILLE JACKSON TROPHY

Killerwhales competed in their first competition of the 2006/07 swimming season at Bishops Stortford in the Kenville Jackson Memorial Trophy and took top honours to retain the trophy just ahead of the host club. Coach Jan Hegmann was absolutely thrilled with the teams performance she commented "In an event which we hoped would at best see 'the cobwebs blown-out' it was amazing to see such impressive swims for the youngsters many of whom are already performing to or better than their previous best times".

Of the 50 event team competition contested by 4 clubs KWSC came home first in 25 races, they had a further 12 second places and 7 thirds. Setting the tone for the Whales performance was Kirsty Forbes who with a great time finished well clear of the opposition in the Open 200m medley, she later went on to swim in the 100m backstroke which she won by a similar margin. As impressive was the swim of Julia Braybrooke who competed over 4 lengths in the butterfly, a truly gutsy swim saw her battle all of the way to the final touch just edging out the girl from Hitchen over the final 10m. The two girls combined with Jodie Momodu (breast) and Lauren Andrews (freestyle) to win the 4x50m medley relay. In a novel 6x50m freestyle relay Kirsty and Lauren we joined by Kalei Andrews, Katie Miles, Henny Andrews and Georgia Shaw to again finish victorious. Jodie who had a busy night swam in the 100m breast to a very good 2nd place and Lauren came home 3rd in the 100m free.

The Boys Open age group we also treated to their first win in the second race when Dean Smith won the 200m medley. Dan Hime was level pegging with the boy from Bishop Stortford over every metre of his 100m fly event, at the end the two could not be separated and were award joint first place. Dan later swam to first place in the 100m free as did his team-mate Matt Smith who won his 100m breaststroke by some distance. James Croxon managed a very creditable 3rd in the 100m backstroke. James, Dan and Matt were joined by Adam Conway for the 4x50m medley with Adam swimming the anchor leg to bring the boys home in first place by two seconds. The four later combined with Dean and Tom Bircham for the final race of the evening the Open 6x50m freestyle relay which they won with an average split time of 26 seconds.

The boys in the 15/ under age group were simply awesome, they made their intentions clear in their first race when Dan Bleach, Johnny Congdon, Tom Bircham, and Dean Smith combined in the 4x50m freestyle relay to win in 1.48.30 over 5 seconds clear of second. The same quartet raced in 4x50m medley relay to an equally impressive margin this time with D.Smith (backstroke), Bircham (breast), Bleach (fly) and Congdon (free). The boys raced individually in the same disciplines as the medley race with wins for Smith, Bircham and Congdon with Bleach being just edged into 2nd by half a second.

In the girls 15/u there were wins in the 100m freestyle for Katie Miles (in a new best time) and 100m back for Katinka Merchan. Kalei Andrews was a fine second in the 100m fly as was Robyn Beadel in the 100m breaststroke. The girls combined to swim the same disciplines in the 4x50m medley relay and also joined up again for the 4x50m freestyle relay to finish second in both events.

The girls 13/under were fantastic in their first race, the 4x50m medley was won in fine style with Liane Kennedy (back), Jodie Momodu (breast), Holly Jackson (fly) and Georgia Shaw (free) coming home 4 seconds ahead of an impressive Bishop Stortford quartet. The girls were narrowly beaten later in the 4x50m free by Bishop Stortford finishing in second place. Jodie went on to win her 100m breaststroke as did Georgia in her 100m freestyle. Liane a late replacement for Holly had no need to be nervous as she swam to a new best time in the 100m fly, Georgia took second in the 100m back.

The 13/u boys look very good as they dominated both of their relay races. The medley quartet of Toby Andrews (back), Lewis Clifford-Stephenson (breast), Tom Webb (fly) and Glenn Kennedy (free) swam home in first place as they did in the 4x50m freestyle. Lewis and Glenn won their respective 100m Breaststroke and freestyle races. Tom and Toby were both second in the fly and backstroke races with Toby setting a new best mark.

In the youngest age group the 11/u swam superbly in both the boys and girls races. The girls 4x50m freestyle team of Molly Sparks, Cassie Beadel, Danielle Rooke and Demi Smith swam well over all four legs finishing just behind the others in 4th. Cassie was replaced by Mikaela Kennedy (free) in the Medley and brought the girls home to a great second place. The girls all recorded new best time in their individual swims, Molly swam to second place in the 50m fly, Danielle swam to 3 place in the 50m back, and Demi swam to 4th place in both the 50m breast and free.

The boys were represented by Danielle Laffey (back), Joe Sparkes (breast), George Crow (fly) and Alex Merchan (free) in the 4x50m medley, they battled all the way but after jus being held off to finish third the boys were unfortunately disqualified for a faulty change-over. The same four swam the freestyle relay and this time came home legitimately in 4th place. Daniel was very unlucky to be judged as finishing 4th in the 50m backstroke as he recorded the same time as the lad in 3rd, however he has the consolation of recording a new best time. Joe just ran out of steam over the closing stages to finish 4th in the 50 breast. In an unfortunate night for George he swam very well to finish second in the 50m freestyle but was disqualified this time for moving at the start, he did get some reward by recording a new best time in the 50m back finishing in 3rd place.
