Eleven
Killerwhales from the Junior Squad went to Copthall Pools to
swim in Barnet Copthall SC’s 100m Sprints Meet and all came away
with some very impressive new best times.
Ten year old
Grace Jolly swam had three very encouraging swims whilst not
competing in the butterfly, she managed two new best times in
the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke where she finished an
excellent sixth and seventh place respectively.
Eleven year
old Georgia Beadel swam to new best times in all four
disciplines taking a whopping 20 seconds off her previous 100m
butterfly time and finishing ninth, not only did she keep her
form throughout she also had enough in the tank to sprint the
final 25m. It would seem there is more to come for future
butterfly events. Another 11 yr old, Molly Scott had a best
finish of 7th in her preferred breaststroke and fine
8th place in the freestyle, it was in the latter
event that her technique looked much improved and could be
another area where with practice she could achieve a good
standard. Both events and her 100m backstroke were in new best
times. Heather Wilson, also competing in the 11 year age group
had a superb butterfly swim and posted a great time to match,
unfortunately an eagle eyed judge notice uneven hands at one of
the turns resulting in disqualification, a tough lesson to learn
but a great swim should give her confidence for next time. A new
best time in the 100m breaststroke gave some consolation.
Twelve year
old Kate Dampster looked very powerful in her three swims, she
not only recorded new best times in the 100m breast, free and
backstroke she also recorded new best times for the respective
50m split times. Unfortunately she transgressed somewhere in the
breaststroke and was disqualified, but in the other events she
finished both in 7th place. Annabelle Jolly swam well
in her four races was rewarded with seven new best times, 4
improvements in the 100’s and 3 new 50m improvements in her
splits for back, fly and free. However it was the 100m
breaststroke that saw her improve her time by over 10 seconds.
The boys
faired just as well as the girls. Eleven year old Lawrence
Halsey did not compete in the butterfly but his stroke in the 3
other races looked very good. He set new best times in the
breast, back and free and in the latter two he also recorded two
new best 50m times. Tom Skingsley was another eleven year old to
improve on his previous times, by 3 seconds in the backstroke, 7
seconds in the freestyle and a mighty 11 seconds in the
breaststroke.
12 year old
Joe Sissons and Michael Walsh had a good gala. Joe swam in all
four events, his butterfly was very impressive taking 20 seconds
off his previous time and finishing fourth. 11 seconds were
knocked off his backstroke time and 3 seconds off both his
breaststroke and freestyle. Michael did not swim the fly but did
reduce his personal best time in a well controlled backstroke
(finishing 8th) and a good breaststroke (8th).
Relative
newcomer Charlie Wood is making a big impact, not entered for
the fly he did set up new best times in the other three events
including 50m split times. An aggressive first50m in the
freestyle saw him turn in 32 seconds, he couldn’t sustain the
pace but still recorded a 4 second improvement to finish 8th.
In the backstroke he finished 6th and 9th
in the breaststroke.
