Killerwhales
talented 15 year old Kirsty Forbes qualified for 7 events in the
ASA National Youth Championships 2005 and had high hopes of
improving again on the personal standards she had set this
season. Illness in the week preceding the Championships was not
ideal preparations for Kirsty but she remained positive and
travelled to the Ponds Forge Pool in Sheffield in good spirit.
She had decided to concentrate on 5 of the 7 races and her
strategy paid off as it became obvious that her illness would
prevent her from competing at the levels that she would have
desired. Her best event the 200m backstroke saw her qualify for
the final in 9th place some 4 seconds down on her seasons best.
A positive attitude to the final saw Kirsty start well turning
in 3rd place at 50m a fraction behind Grace Francis of
Chelmsford SC. At halfway she maintained her form just slipping
marginally down to 4th place still behind Francis. At 150m she
continued to work very hard and turned for the final length in
5th place marginally behind Francis in fourth but just ahead of
Rachel Lefley of Nova Centurions in sixth. A great battle
between the three down the final 50m saw Kirsty overhaul Francis
but so did Lefley who touch Kirsty into 5th place by 4 10ths
second in a time of 2.23.02.
In Kirsty's 100m backstroke she just missed out on a place in
the final by under half a second finishing in 14 place overall.
In her 400m Individual Medley event she swam well only to suffer
the disappointment at the finish to discover that she had been
adjudged to have performed technical infringement on her 6th
turn. In her other two races the 400m and 800m freestyle she
finished in 30th and 31st places respectively. |
