After the
previous weeks disappointment at Southampton when Fareham Nomads
weekend gala was cancelled after just three races the
Killerwhales decided to give their swimmers and end of season
gala like no other. The hastily arranged but extremely
successful event took place over three hours starting at 6 am on
Saturday morning. The event format was 200m medley, 100m back,
breast, free and fly followed by 200m freestyle and then a
cannon relay involving all 43 swimmers in 3 teams (lucky
Christina Stenson having to swim 2 lengths). Heat winners were
rewarded with a lucky dip into the sweet bag, race winners were
announced after calculating who had improved on their previous
best time by the widest margin or were closest to their time. A
Top Girl and Top Boy were calculated by adding all improvement
times to give a cumulative time total.
The Top Girl
award and pink winners sash went to Joanna Johnstone who would
have won a Top Smile award if there had been one. Joanna swam
extremely well in all of her races improving her previous 200m
medley and freestyle times by over 20 seconds. She manage to
take first place in 5 out of the 6 races in the 13 years age
group, Amy Hime swam a great 100m breaststroke to deny Joanna a
clean sweep.
The Top Boy
award and blue winners sash went to David Haynes in the 16 years
+ section who managed to improve 4 of the six events by the
biggest margin, a massive 19 seconds in the 100m breaststroke
helped David’s overall total. Taking the 100m fly and free was
Ben Clifford-Stephenson who also claimed bragging rights by
winning the 100m freestyle race.
In the boys 11
and under events honours were shared between Toby Andrews and
Lewis Clifford-Stephenson, Toby took the 200m medley and
freestyle plus the 100m breaststroke, Lewis took the 100m fly,
free and backstroke awards.
The boys 12
years awards were shared between Joe Sissons and Lee Parker. Lee
took four of the awards finishing with best pb improvement in
the 200m medley and 200m freestyle, 100m fly and freestyle.
Young Joe took the 100m breaststroke and backstroke awards.
Johnny Congdon
and Andrew Dawkins shared the awards for the boys 13 year
section with Andrew 100m & 200m free and 100m breaststroke and
backstroke. Johnny won the 200m medley, 100m butterfly awards.
James Croxon
and Dean Smith equally shared the honours for the 14 year boys,
James taking the 200m medley & freestyle plus the 100m fly, Dean
taking the 100m back, breast and freestyle awards.
Adam Conway
was unlucky not to get top boy for his efforts in the 15 year
boys section having taken the award for all six of his events.
Sisters Cassie
and Georgia Beadel shared the honours for the girls 11 years and
under section. Younger sister Cassie improved on her 100m free
and backstroke, the latter by over 18 seconds. Georgia took the
award for 100m breast and butterfly, and also the 200m free &
medley, her medley swim improved on her time set only 3 days
prior by over 19 seconds.
Megan Davis
took five awards in the girls 12 year age group, both her 200m
medley and 200m freestyle were by over 21 and 17 seconds
respectively, her previous best times had only been recorded on
the preceding Wednesday. She also took the award for 100m
breast, fly and freestyle. Georgia Shaw took the award for best
time in the 100m backstroke.
Emily Endacott
and Rachel Green shared the awards for the girls 14 year age
group, Emily took the award for the 100m freestyle, breaststroke
and backstroke, the latter two events improved her previous
times by over 10 seconds. Rachel took the 100m fly and 200m
medley and freestyle awards improving on her previous best for
the latter two events by over 8 and 10 seconds respectively.
In the girls
15 years Ellena Wheatley and Lauren Andrews both set the
standards, Lauren took the award for the 100m backstroke and
butterfly events. Ellena took the medals for the 200m medley and
the 100m & 200m freestyle.
The girls 16+
events were shared equally between Laura Andrews, Julia
Braybrooke and Katie Hegmann. Laura took the 100m breaststroke
award; Katie took the 100m back and freestyle, whilst Julia took
the 200m medley, 200m free and 100m butterfly awards.
The final
event was the Cannon Relay which involved all swimmers. A tight
race during the early ‘baton’ changes saw the white team open a
two metre gap, each time the blue team threatened to close the
gap the whites put in a burst to regain their lead.
After the
racing was over it left the officials to calculate the winners,
every competing swimmer received a certificate showing the times
they swam for each race and a handful of sweets. The winners for
each event in each age group all received a sparkling gold medal
etched with the event details superbly set off with a green
ribbon. Top Boy and Top Girl were both presented with their
winners sash’s declaring TOP BOY or TOP GIRL 2005.
Congratulation
to both Joanna and David and all other swimmers, and well done
to the event organisers, gala officials and helpers. Thanks to
you one and all.. |
