"They decided to go in another direction with the character of the doctor, and then I guess that didn't work that well. There were a lot of letters from fans, and I was asked to return."

Third season comeback
"I'm very happy. It's nice to be back. I gave some careful consideration to the decision. But overall, I was very pleased to be asked back, and I had certainly missed working with my fellow cast members."
"I had mixed feelings, because it wasn't done very clearly. Hollywood doesn't do things like that very well - you never get what the real story is. You hear rumours about different things, but no one ever substantiates it with fact; I think it was to do with someone who was a producer on the show but is no longer around - although I don't mean Gene Roddenberry. I wasn't sure if I wanted to come back, and I thought about it for a very long time, but I'm glad I did return. I have great friends here and that makes it really wonderful to come to work."
"Once you thought you were a part of something, and then you're away, and then you're brought back, you realize, well, it's a job. Anything could happen. It would be nice to stay with the show but in this world anything could happen. But I'm not worried about it. And I'm very glad I'm not worried about it. If it happens that I'm off again, then that's the way it goes."
