| "I was doing a play in New York, and I came to Los Angeles to test for a film. I was flown out for the day, and my agent said she wanted me to go over to Paramount to audition for Star Trek. I'd never been a fan of the series before - I hadn't even seen the show. I'd seen photographs of Spock and the captain, but I didn't know that the captain's name was Kirk." "I had time to kill before the plane left, so I came over. My agent told me to audition for any of the women parts, but I only had time to do one so I went for the senior one. The scene we did at the audition was from The Naked Now, when the virus had taken Beverly over. She seemed to me like the funniest part - which is ironic because she is such a serious character ! I've been told that I was the first person to audition for it - they called the producers over and that was it." |
"I was out here on something else for literally a day, and on my way to the airport I stopped by to read and meet the producers and then I went back to New York where I was waiting to hear about The Matchmaker, starring Linda Hunt and Ken Macmillan which was being staged at the La Jolla Playhouse and which I had my heart set on doing. But the Star Trek producers kept on asking me "Are you sure you're not interested?" and I didn't want to come back and test because I wasn't that interested but as I got to know the producers and got to meet Gene Roddenberry more and more, I was very impressed by him and his vision of the show. As I started to hear about who was signing up in the cast I thought "My goodness, these people have all done a lot of theatre" and I realised it could be great fun and I could have a great time. So here I am and I'm glad I'm here ! I never realised I could have so much fun; it's a great group of people. I really like my fellow cast members and that's the greatest thing about it, because it means you really look forward to going to work and we can discuss scenes so that if we're not happy about something then there's a forum so we can speak about things." |
