| Encounter at Farpoint |
| When Riker learns that Beverly is already familiar with "Jean-Luc", Wesley tells the commander that "When I was little, he brought my father's body home to us". |
| Wesley asks Beverly if she can get him a look at the bridge.... |
| Wesley | Are you afraid of the captain too ? |
| Beverly | I certainly am not. |
| Wesley | But captain Picard is a pain, isn't he ? |
 | Your father liked him very much. Great explorers are often lonely, no chance to have a family. |
| Beverly has her first words with captain Picard of the Enterprise when she goes to him on the bridge.... |
 |
Permission to report to the captain. |
| Her late husband's close comrade is gob-smacked to see the doctor with her son again, ten years after his tragic visit to their home. |
| After Beverly had used the vehicle of introducing herself to the coy captain in order to embarrass him and get her son a look on the bridge, Jean-Luc eventually uses the apology to approach Beverly in the privacy of her office to see if she might prefer work elsewhere. |
| Bev | Can I help you captain ? |
| J-L | I, er, I didn't want you thinking me harsh, cold blooded. |
| Bev | Why oh why would I ever think that ? |
| J-L | I didn't welcome aboard personally, professionally. I made you come to me on the bridge. I yelled at your son, who as you pointed out was quite correct. He does seem to have a very good grasp of starship operations. |
| Bev | You've just won this mother's heart, captain. |
| J-L | Ah, but now, your assignment here.... I would consider and approve a transfer for you. |
| Bev | Oh, you consider me unqualified ? |
| J-L | Hardly. Your service record shows you're just the chief medical officer I want. |
| Bev | Then you must object to me personally. |
| J-L | I'm trying to be considerate of your feelings, doctor. For you to work with a commanding officer who would continually remind you of a terrible tragedy.... |
| Bev | If I had any objections to serving with you, I wouldn't have requested this assignment, captain. |
| J-L | You requested this posting ? |
| Bev | My feelings about my husband's death will have no effect on how I serve you, this vessel, or this mission. |
| J-L | Ah, then welcome aboard, doctor. I, er, I hope we can be friends. |
