Stunts
Gates has had stage training for fencing, karate and general combat. She did all her own stunts in Remember Me, which look quite strenuous. Especially since she learnt only a few days later that she was pregnant.
"I was actually pregnant during the whole season of the show, so I got bigger and bigger and the lab coat got larger and larger to hide it. It ended up looking like a ski parka in the end."
Remember Me
"I did all of those, and it wasn't too hard. I did the odd bit of mime as I was sucked into the vortex - walking against the wind, and I also did a forward shoulder roll which is a basic stunt move. We were just glad the wig didn't come off!"
Floating horizontally? "That was on wires. The shoulder roll was harder than the wires. The wires were just uncomfortable, but it's not really frightening or difficult."
Qpid
Later that season in the big rescue fight scenes of Qpid, Beverly is limited to a supporting role by hitting men over the head with flowerpots. Eventually her seven months "bump" in The Host was hidden by the lab coat and judicious camera angles....
"Marina and I thought it was funny that she and I had actually studied fencing, in different drama school situations, so we can do our own stunts. When we came to do the Robin Hood episode we were doing the "woman with frying pan hits guy over the head" routine, and some of the guys who did not know how to fence had to have stunt people do it. I thought it was a little traditional, and I try to do stunts wherever I can. I've done a lot of stage combat, and I've done karate and things like that, and I think that women who are going to be on spaceships are going to be able to do those sorts of things, especially if they're on the pioneer ship going out into these unknown territories."
Pat Tallman
The stunts were sometimes done by Pat Tallman. Definitely the Data dive off the boat in Generations. Surely in Suspicions the kick-boxing in the shuttlecraft, and probably the slam into the wall in science lab four, as well as in Genesis when she backs back really hard into the console after Worf does the venom thing. Well, who wouldn't mind getting battered and bruised if Beverly was on hand to make you better ?
Pat Tallman played Kiros in the episode Starship Mine, but is better known as Lyta Alexander in Babylon 5. There used to be a web site with some nice photos, but that's closed now. Hence the few little pictures on this page.
