SOUNDS LIKE FAITH

Sue Edwards from Wrangle in Lincolnshire presents a one hour show featuring contemporary music from Christian bands as well as competitions to win CD's, books and other prizes. Pencilled in for performances are Delirious - who will be supporting Bon Jovi on their forthcoming tour - plus material from local groups & soloists as well as international artists. Sue, 26 formerly a teacher believes she has found her calling in being able to talk about and listen to music. Sue's show will be aired between 7pm & 9pm on Sunday evenings on BBC Radio Lincolnshire (94.9FM) as part of the station's revised schedule. Her shows have also featured interviews with Graham Kendrick, one of the world's leading Christian musicians. Interestingly as a family man Graham often listens to pop music that his children like, and opera which his wife enjoys, whilst one of his recent CD purchases has been the new Eric Clapton CD 'Reptile' ~ as he says he has an eclectic musical tastes!

The show offers a new perspective from familar hymns, with most of the songs featured so far being from the uptempo worship side of Christian music. Whilst the music may not appeal to the station's older fraternity it should appeal to a younger audience more familar with popular choruses and songs sung in the modern church.

Like all programme presenters Sue is keen to hear from listeners, and now has an email contact at: sue.edwards@bbc.co.uk

PROGRAMMES ON OTHER RADIO STATIONS

NORTHERN BLUES

Sadly this excellent programme disappeared from the airwaves on 30 Mar 2003 along with other great 'minority' music programmes 'Edged In Blue' and Henry's 'Folk and Roots' show which finished on 27 March. If, like us you feel that the these progammes are too valuable to loss why not write or email the radio station and let them know how you feel. Henry will still have a programme on Sunday night, the new show 'Henry's Swing Time' which is a retro show playing a variety of rootsy style music from the late 30's to mid 60's. The loss of the original 3 shows will mean that yet another 'avenue' for contemporary music from fields other than mainstream pop has been closed seemingly for ever! The 'Folk & Roots' programme especially gave people the opportunity to hear musicians just how you would hear them at your, so much so that after hearing Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman perform an unexpected Tom Petty song on Henry's radio show earlier in the year, we asked them to perform it when they appeared at Boston Folk Club the next week, they duly did. Such was the importance of these sessions even to better known & long standing artists, that John Renbourn made the long journey down from Scotland to play the final session on the show! The BBC is your national / local radio service which we pay for via our TV licences, if you feel that its not providing the service you want, let them know, like other organisations they can only know people's feelings if you tell them!

Henry Ayrton's Northern Blues - BBC Radio Humberside & other northern BBC Local radio stations. An excellent programme featuring both traditional & modern blues, a comprehensive gig guide for the north of England, Ann Cooper's Hot Blues Line, (tel Ann on 01482 225959 ~ during show time only to include your gigs in the North's Best Blues Gig Guide or email: henry.ayrton@bbc.co.uk), occasional interviews with touring artists (recently featured Paul Jones talking about the Blues Bands 20th Anniversary tour, Henry also interviewed Peter Green soon after his comeback tour!). Make sure if you're a blues fan you tune in between 9 & 10pm on Sunday nights to your local BBC North Radio Station. (unfortunately BBC Radio Lincolnshire for blues fans in their catchment area is linked to the Central BBC Network, which takes Radio 5 Live.

Prior to Northern Blues, Henry presents another programme with a blues flavour, 'Edged In Blue' between 8 - 9pm on BBC Radio Humberside.

Blues News & Gigs

HENRY AYRTON'S FOLK & ROOTS SHOW

Sadly this excellent programme disappeared from the airwaves on 27 Mar 2003 along with other great 'minority' music programmes 'Edged In Blue' and Henry's 'Northern Blues' show which finished on 30 March. If, like us you feel that the these progammes are too valuable to loss why not write or email the radio station and let them know how you feel. Henry will still have a programme on Sunday night between 8.00 - 10.00pm, the new show 'Henry's Swing Time' which is a retro show playing a variety of rootsy style music from the late 30's to mid 60's. The BBC is your national / local radio service which we pay for via our TV licences, if you feel that its not providing the service you want, let them know, like other organisations they can only know people's feelings if you tell them!

Henry Ayrton who presents Northern Blues on Sunday evenings, also presents a Folk & Roots show on Thursday evenings between 9 - 10pm on some local BBC Radio Stations in the North, including BBC Radio Humberside for those living in the northern parts of Lincolnshire. Henry also includes some acoustic blues music in his shows on occasions, with interviews with Martin Simpson (2000) and Emily Druce (2001), these have been broadcast between 9 - 10pm to allow Paul Jones listeners to tune in and enjoy these features.

LINCS FM (102.2FM)

During the week you can find out about live music, theatre events & new film releases on the Andy Fenton show at 6.20pm. This slot features information about Films, Videos, DVD's as well as theatre, some details of live music events are also featured (info is supplied by Fizgig as part of their free service ~ unfortunately due to time constraints not all gigs included in our daily submissions to Lincs FM are mentioned 'On Air'

FM stations in the UK tend to play just mainstream pop music, & do not cater for minority audiences, however Lincs FM does devote 2 hours to country music every Monday evening when Jane Hill presents Country Jukebox between 7 & 9pm.

BBC RADIO 2 - PAUL JONES

BBC Radio 2 shows including: Paul Jones Rhythm & Blues Show between 8 - 9pm Thursdays, now the only programme dedicated to playing the blues on radio 2. Paul includes blues, boogie woogie (not enough, says Bruce!), & gospel style blues, such as The Holmes Brothers. He also does features on the WC Handy awards, the British Blues Connection Awards, forthcoming festivals & occasional specials such as the live concert by Chris Smither & Luther Allison. Another important feature of Paul's shows are the weekly sessions by British & international blues performers, artists such as Lincolnshire's own Walter Harpman Band, & Out Of The Blue have been guests on Paul's programme. Paul also features occasional request shows, so if you've got a favourite blues song write to Paul at BBC Pebble Mill Road, Birmingham. B5 7QQ.

BOB HARRIS

Bob Harris Saturday night show (10.00pm - 1.00am) visit Bob's website

Bob's Saturday night show has grown in popularity since it started a few Christmas's back with a few trial programmes. The special guest sessions from Bob's late night shows on Radio One featuring artists such as Iain Matthews & Michael Katon haven't made a reappearance (yet!), but valuable air time has been given to many artists who might never have been heard of but for Bob's show, people such as Eric Bibb, Guy Davis, Sam Mullins, Judie Tzuke (since her comeback on her own label!), Eva Cassidy & many more. The emphasis tends to be on American music. There are still many 'Whispering Bob' fans across the UK, some still not aware that he is back presenting a regular show on the BBC!

Bob Harris Country show (7 - 8pm Thursdays) - Following in the footsteps of his Saturday night shows, Bob now presents BBC Radio 2's Country programme. Though this has raised a few eyebrows & some caustic 'what does he know about country music' comments, (including some locally!), Bob's knowledge of modern American music has introduced more broadminded listeners to some younger American artists who are following in the footsteps of Hank Williams, Bill Monroe & the like. Bob also plays some of the older country & western material too, & features sessions by artists such as Stacey Earl. No programme will ever suit everyone, but an important aspect is that Bob may attract a new audience to country music, & some of these listeners may enjoy some of the older music too, & perhaps even support their local country music clubs, so its not all bad news, is it!

IN CONCERT

In Concert features a variety of excellent live concerts (often recorded specially recorded for the BBC) by established & newer artists throughout the year. (Saturday 8 - 9pm)

MIKE HARDING

The successor to Jim Lloyd who presented the folk show on BBC Radio 2 for many years, unfortunately the appointment of Mike has been criticised by some people in folk circles, however Mike has endeavoured to maintain a balance between older & more traditional performers and newer artists who may generate an upswing in folk music which could benefit even small folk clubs! Broadcast Wednesday evenings 8 - 9pm.

Visit the new BBC Radio 2 Folk website

Duncan Newmarch at Invicta FM, Kent

Former Lincs FM presenter Duncan Newmarch broadcast his final Lincs FM show on Friday 18th October 2002, before moving 'down south' to Invicta FM in Kent where Duncan will be presenting the early morning show. To see what Duncan is up to now and listen to his shows check out the Invicta FM website.

'Duncs' was a great supporter of Fizgig over the years and used our information on his daily shows. One day he was heard to say "How about putting a photo of me on your website" after reading out about our website following one Friday gig guide. Well he just meant it as a joke, but ... (picture may take a little while to load, please be patient)
