TOM NAPPER & TOM BLISS

Folk duo Tom Napper and Tom Bliss are becoming a very popular act at folk clubs and festivals up and down the country ~ a little background about the duo ~ Tom Napper was in Dab Hand (with Tom McConville, Gordon Tyrall/Jez Lowe) plus many other duos over 30 years as a full time pro folk musician. Tom Bliss was once signed by pop maestro Pete Waterman (!) and fronted the 'mighty' Yorkshire folk-rockers Slide (uk).

"They are brilliant now, a fusing of two exceptional talents.. actually fantastically good.. gutsy, rootsy... a honed performance that wants for nothing.. spark off each other like an established comedy act.. and what songs! to say TB's a gifted songwriter is an understatement.. a master craftsman.. strikingly original stories... but their main strength is musicianship.. wonderfully subtle and understated accompaniments.. TN's the bee knees... banjo and mandolin virtuoso.. go and see this hugely talented duo the next time they come anywhere near you. You won't be disappointed." fRoots / Living Tradition /Various

The new Napper BlissCD, "The Kelping" (the making of size from seaweed in the Scillies) was released early in 2005. Featuring 16 tracks, nearly 70 minutes of music and song, the majority Bliss originals (both story songs and tunes, probably his best work to date), and the rest are Trad (apart from one lovely Napper tune - and those are rare as truffles).

As well as Kelping we find out about Dunkerque, Sir Cloudisley Shovell, 'honour killings,' the real Grace Darling, The Battle of Jersey, Charles I's beautiful doomed Queen Henrietta, how to April Fool your local publican, Bliss Tweed, the founding of the RNLI - and what that horrid Molly-o (Lily of the West) really did.

Mostly it's just the two Toms, pretty much as they play live, (with a few subtle additions here and there to compensate for lack of visuals) - plus, and here's the real bonus, guest bodhran on 5 tracks by champion Ciaran Boyle (highly respected by the very best).

Some hauntingly powerful singing, rousing choruses, a couple of laughs, classy accompaniments on guitar, mandocello, octave mandolin and squeezeboxes - plus top tune playing on banjo and mandolin.

This second album by The Toms builds on their universally acclaimed first album 'The Silverlode,' and a fast-growing reputation around the clubs and festivals (they're playing some of the biggies this year) as an engaging, entertaining, emotional-roller-coaster of an act.

Tom Bliss's new solo album 'Mixed Moss' (SLIP 009) is due for release Feb 06. The album includes 9 new Bliss compositions, 4 trad arrangements, and one song by Henry Clements. The production (by Alistair Russell at Glade Recordings) is about 50% Tom on his own, and 50% with guests Tom Napper, Maggie Boyle, Patsy Matheson, Bryony Griffith, Dave Bowie, Tony Taffinder and Chris Parkinson (Tom, Tom, Tony and Parky will be working as The Pipers Sons in 06).
