EMILY DRUCE

FRI 1st DECEMBER 2000 (8.30pm)

Released her highly acclaimed debut CD 'The Guilt Trip' in 1999, an offering that stands alongside any re-issued albums from the 60's folk-blues boom. (See Review)A fine mixture of county blues classics and originals, good funky acoustic guitar playing & strong vocals - her off stage quiet & self-effacing manner is a complete contrast to her blues belting style on stage. Influences include Big Bill Broozy, Memphis Minnie, Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder, also Sleepy John Estes and Bob Dylan. Her profile was heightened recently following an appearance at the Sidmouth Festival & the inclusion of her version of the Skip James song 'I'm So Glad' on the FRoots magazine sampler CD, as well as appearances at the Burnley Blues Festival. This exciting young performer looks set to become a big attraction on the national blues circuit soon.

NOVEMBER 2000

We had two gigs in Nov 2000, Ruth Wyand and Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby

RUTH WYAND

Friday 24th November 2000

We are pleased to be able to bring another talented American performer to the Heart Of Lincolnshire Folk, Roots & Blues Club, Ruth in turn feels the intimate atmosphere of clubs such as the Heart Of Lincolnshire Club bring out the best in acoustic music.

A guitarist & singer/songwriter Ruth draws on American roots music to frame her lyrical gift and demonstrate her strengths as an accomplished guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. As an Americana artist she weaves traditional and contemporary folk, blues, swing and traditional country into a colorfully rhythmic musical quilt.

Ruth plays all over the world on a variety of stages from book stores to festival stages with acts such as Little Feat, Dr. John, Ellis Paul, Les Sampou and John Hammond to coffeehouses and folk festivals to the streets of Paris. She was selected as a People's Choice Award winner 1998 by The Philadelphia Folk Factory, she is the president of The Garden State Songwriter's Association and has written, produced and played on several folk, country and blues artist's CD's in New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia and Nashville.

The first thing that strikes the listener is her powerful guitar playing. Her finger style technique with a variety of tunings alone is a whole show but then she switches gears and moves into a smokin' swing or a low down slide. Her vocal accompaniment is at once languid and athletic and the songs she writes reflect her humorous personality and compassionate nature. Ruth Wyand's musical integrity stands out. She is a true original. The variety she offers in her shows will fascinate American roots music lovers worldwide.

CATHRYN CRAIG & BRIAN WILLOUGHBY

Friday 10th Novemember

The spectacular combination of Cathryn Craig's exquisite vocals & the stunning acoustic guitar work of Brian Willoughby, long time member of the renowned British band The Strawbs make for a superb evening of original acoustic music.

Nashville's wonderful singer songwriter Cathryn, who also plays guitar, is one of the finest acoustic singer songwriters touring today, she has worked & recorded with Emmylou Harris, Tom Paxton, Micky Newbury as well as featuring on a film soundtrack & TV. Her highly acclaimed debut album 'Porch Songs' which was actually recorded live on her back porch is regarded as a classic in acoustic roots circles, she followed this with an impressive second album simply titled 'Cathyrn Craig'. She established herself on the British music scene in the early 90's performing with country rock musicians Gary Hall & Mark Wilkinson.

Cathryn has teamed up with the skilful acoustic guitarist & songwriter Brian Willoughby. Brian is the lead guitarist with The Strawbs whom he joined in 1978, & he has since thrilled fans with his superb guitar playing.

He also played on Nanci Griffith's 1998 album 'Other Voices Too' & has toured as a member of Nanci's band in 1998 & 2000. Brian actually began his professional career as guitarist for Mary Hopkin, & he was later a session musician on Monty Python recordings. With Cathryn his technique & skill on the acoustic guitar is showcased perfectly, whilst songs such as 'Alice's Song' (written about Brian's autistic niece) & 'Black & White' (the title track of Brian's debut CD which features Cathryn & Mary Hopkin on vocals) written by Brian & Cathryn are full of meaning.

This excellent duo's songs & music will appeal to a wide audience, & this will be an ideal opportunity to see two supremely talented artists in the intimate setting of a small club. Our biggest yet! ~ Advance booking is advised for this concert. (ticket prices to be confirmed - don't forget its free entrance for accompanied children - introduce them to great live music young!).

OCTOBER 2000

CHRIS AND HEATHER ALONE TOGETHER

Christopher Hawley and Heather Ogren

As part of their European Tour ~ Fall 2000

FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER

For our October gig we feature a double headed bill featuring artists from Colorado USA. (date will be confirmed shortly as Heather & Chris put together their tour schedule).

Heather Ogren will be opening for Christopher, singing and playing a combination of her own songs and popular folk music. She is a student in the Classical Guitar Program at CU Boulder and combines her classical guitar technique with a more modern approach to lyrical folk music.

Heather has released a 4-song demo CD, Crickets in my Backyard, her lyrics are inspired by a combination of her love for nature and her experiences living in many places. She has spent many years in Europe and looks forward to returning on this tour.

For the second part of the evening sit back & enjoy the guitar & song writing of Christopher Hawley, who began to study the guitar at age twelve, developing his distinct fingerstyle technique through a classical repertoire. His love of rock and roll led him in and out of several bands during his high school and college years. Each musical experience sharpened his composition skills, while each personal experience gave him some of the subject matter for his songs.

Christopher has toured the East Coast and Colorado several times, & has recently completed his second tour of America's West Coast, which coincided with the release of his new acoustic album, which was released May 28th. 'Naked Songs' is so named for its collection of stripped down songs, which focus only on the essential guitar and vocal and convey the raw feelings of each song.

Naked Songs reflects in its songwriting some of Christopher's experiences with touring in the country-funk song "Change Is Good." He returns to his classical roots with a nylon string rendition of "Greensleeves." Christopher's love of traditional bluegrass music shows through in the "Hobo Song."

The "Naked Song" is an upbeat country blues with a twist, while "Waiting on Tanja" sparsely steps to a reggae beat. "Beignets for Breakfast" combines the elements of slide guitar and New Orleans rhythm. Christopher's song writing talent shines in the swing jazz/blues ballad "Alone Together."

"Waiting for the Snow," written during a period of ski bumming around the West, is an original bluegrass song based on a true story of following the snowstorms to powder. "Missouri Breaks," although it is an instrumental piece is also a true story, inspired by a stretch of the Missouri River in northern Montana. Christopher's nylon string version of "Brandy" is not necessarily based on a true story, but it could be, and everybody knows it anyway. A remarkable variety of styles!

Together, these two performers provide a perfect balance of acoustic music, appropriate for a wide variety of audiences. They perform two separate sets, although they collaborate on some songs.

During his extensive travels in America & Europe, David has collected a vast library of material, from well known, little known & unknown songwriters. JUNE 2000

FOLK'S RISING YOUNG STAR!

BILL JONES ~ FRI 23 JUNE 2000

BILL JONES - Rising young star of folk, Bill (short for Belinda) sings a spirited mix of Irish, Scottish & English traditional & self penned songs, accompanying herself on piano & accordion. (She is also an accomplished flute & Irish whistle player.) Her debut CD 'Turn To Me' featuring new interpretations of traditional songs & tunes, lively jigs, beautiful ballads that will tug at your heart & tales that enthral released earlier in the year is receiving critical acclaim, with airplay bringing her remarkable talent to new audiences (such as ourselves!). Her concert sets are memorable for the range of emotion & fresh approach she brings to her music, which appeals equally to die hard devotees of acoustic music & newcomers to the genre. 'Bill has a beauiful voice with a slight huskiness that prickles your neck ..... she delivered one of the finest set at the festival ... ' (Rusty & Stu Wright - Fylde Folk Festival). It was Bill's wonderful singing & piano work that caught our ear immediately on a Folkwaves programme a few weeks back, she already has a busy schedule of club & festival appearances during the summer, it 's fortunate that Bill has been able to fit in an appearance at the Heart Of Lincolnshire Club (her first appearance in the county) prior to appearing at the Redditch Folk Festival, where she won the 1999 Redditch Singer Of The Year competition. "Bill also proved to be one of the hits of Redditch '99. Her singing & playing of a well though out mix of traditional & contemporary material visibly impressed an audience used to a diet of the best, & only the best. This young woman need only carry on the way she's already going to be one of the stars of the field within a very short time" (Andrew Fletcher - Redditch Folk Festival). A few days after her appearance at our club she is recording a session for BBC Radio 2's Folk Programme - soon many more will be aware of this young, enthusiastic & innovative musician, don't miss the opportunity to see a star of the future in the intimate setting of your local folk club!

APRIL 2000

ANNIE'S BLUES

EASTER MONDAY ~ 24th APRIL 2000

Following the success of our opening gig in March, we are pleased to announce 2 further dates for your diaries. Our next gig takes place on Monday 24th April when our guests are Annie's Blues, a classic acoustic style blues duo, whose songs originate from the 'Empress Of The Blues' Bessie Smith & Ma Rainey, Leroy Carr, Big Bill Broonzy & Muddy Waters. Singer Annie is backed by Geoff on boogie woogie / rhythm & blues piano backing.

Annie started singing the blues & folk songs in folk clubs & pubs during the late 70's. She is strongly influenced by the late Jo Ann Kelly, Sandy Denny, & also by Americans Carly Simon & Bonnie Raitt. More recently she has developed an individual style, after studying numerous old recordings by the classic lady blues singers of the 20's & 30's, making her songs 'her own' by stylistic interpretation.

Geoff has a powerful left hand which has been pounding out twelve bar boogie bass patterns since the late 50's, starting with rock'n'roll ballads like 'Blueberry Hill' & gradually working towards a Chicago Rhythm & Blues approach. His agile & melodic right hand has been known to approach a delicate musical subtlety, especially when accompanying the emotionally powerful delivery of Annie's classic blues numbers & more recent jazz-blues songs & jug-band numbers if we can get 'audience participation' with percussion, harmonica & rhythm!

Goodtime music a speciality ..... ! Some risqué lyrics, traditionally ...... !

MARCH 2000

RELAUNCH GIG

A.G. & KATE / GENTLE UNION

Saturday 18th March 2000

A.G. & Kate are a duo from Holland, whose infectious music, with folk-styled vocals and old-time country instrumentals have thrilled thousands on both sides of the Atlantic.

Having heard the duo perform 'live in the studio' on Mick Smith's Country music programme early in 1999, we felt that their music which encompasses a variety of styles, including country, bluegrass, folk & Gospel would perhaps encourage a new audience into Lincolnshire's folk clubs. Little did we realise the musical pedigree of the duo we decided to book for our little rural folk club, following that radio show!

They have appeared at a number of major music festivals in the UK, including the Peterborough Country Music Festival, the Greenbelt Christian Festival & the Wembley Country Music Festival, & toured as far north as the Shetland Islands.

They have toured Holland, the UK and America playing their unique brand of old time country/ bluegrass, folk & Gospel, on 5 string-banjo, autoharp, mandolin & guitar, to audiences at clubs, festivals, in churches & prisons.

A.G. & Kate completed a 6 month tour of the USA in December, playing in 11 States, appearing at the Ozark Folk Centre in Mountain View, Arkansas. During one of their programs in a high security prison in West Virginia, they were presented with a Mountain Dulcimer, made by one of the inmates as a token of appreciation, it has been a wonderful addition to their other instruments.

They have also appeared at most of the big bluegrass festivals in the USA, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville & Ernest Tubb's Midnight Jamboree.

Starting their musical career in 1972, they have been on the road full time since 1976, during this time they have recorded over 20 albums.

see review of recent gig

There will also be a showcase set by Lincolnshire based duo Gentle Union. Chris & Sheena have been performing in Lincolnshire folk clubs & festivals for several of years, since starting their musical career at Coningsby Folk Club. They blend traditional folk, folky pop & original songs, in entertaining & often humorous style.

We are delighted to be able to bring the unique music of A.G. & Kate, & popular local duo Gentle Union to The Heart Of Lincolnshire Folk, Roots & Blues Club on Saturday 18th March, performance starts 8.00pm.
