BOSTON FOLK CLUB 2004 PROGRAMME

QUICKSILVER

MON 12 JAN 2004

Quicksilver are Hilary Spencer (of Artisan fame) and Grant Baynhan (of BBC 'That's Life') and together they form a duo that is rapidly becoming one of the most in-demand acts on the folk scene. They sing a wide-ranging repertoire of musical styles, featuring Hilary's wonderful voice, more than ably accompanied by Grant on guitar. A great start to the New Year

Members £5.00 / Visitors £6.00

JET plus DAVE PARKINSON

MON 9 FEB

Another of our special occasional series of evenings featuring local performers in an extended spot. JET are on a one band mission to restore skiffle music to its once mighty position.

Dave Parkinson needs very little introduction to regular visitors to Boston Folk Club. His repertoire of mixed styles of songs have made him one of the most popular of our resident performers.

Members £3.00 / Visitors £3.50

CATHRYN CRAIG & BRIAN WILLOUGHY

MON 8 MAR

A welcome return to Boston for this top class act. Cathryn's vocals and Brian's guitar accompaniment is a marriage made in Heaven. Not surprising really, when you realise that Cathryn has a reputation for being one of Nashville's finest singers and Brian's experience as lead guitarist with The Strawbs has made him a folk-rock legend. Country / blues / folk has never sounded so good.

Members £5.00 / Visitors £6.50

MRS ACKROYD BAND

MON 19 APR

Be afraid - be very afraid! There is a chance you could expire from laughing at this gang of nutters. Alison Younger, Chris Harvey and Hilary Spencer (again!) provide the musical backing to the one and only Les Barker's inimitable comedy verse. The last time they were here they were brilliant. There's no reason to expect anything different tonight!

Members £6.00 / Visitors £7.00

BILL WHALEY & DAVE FLETCHER

MON 10 MAY

Did you get to Bill & Dave's CD launch concert last November? Yes? Then you know how good this pair of local singers is. If you missed it, now's your chance to catch up. In the unlikely event that you've never heard of them before, bring your singing voice with you - joining in the choruses is compulsory.

JEZ LOWE & THE BAD PENNIES

Very popular act from England's North East, Jez began working the folk circuit in 1973. He released his debut album in 1980, he worked as a solo artist through most of the 80's before forming Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies in the latter part of that decade following the release of his LP 'Bad Penny'. They have gone on to become one of the biggest draws on the folk scene ~ this is a wonderful opportunity to catch them performing in the intimate setting of your local folk club.

DAVE & JULIE EVARDSON

MON 14 JUN

Think of a great songwriter from Grimsby! OK, now think of another one! Dave has been in John Connoly's shadow for ages, but at last he is getting the attention he deserves. Songs such as 'North Wall' and 'Forty Thieves' have been taken up by some of the country's top performers, resulting in Dave's name being better known outside of N.E. Lincolnshire. Together with his wife, Julie, a great night of fine songs and fun is on the menu.

Members £3.50 / Visitors £4.00

THE QUEENSBERRY RULES

MON 13 SEP

The Queensberry Rules are an acoustic trio who feature brothers Gary and Duncan Wilcox (Percussion & Double Bass respectively) who once played in folk-pop group Bonetti who appeared at the Axe and Cleaver a number of times a few years back, and Phil Hulse (Guitar). The group hail from Stoke On Trent and some of their original songs are about aspects of their hometown. Their music tips a wink to folk, bluegrass, country & blues wrapped up with a skiffle sensibility, a wry sense of humour, lyrical sense and watertight harmonies. This varied mix gives this friendly young band an almost indefinable sound. The band have released three critically acclaimed CD's, the most recent 'Heritage & History' features audience favourites 'Mapman' and 'Jam Jar Wakes' which feature in the band's great live shows, along with inspirational arrangements of traditional songs & original songs.

DICK APPLETON

MON 11 OCT

A long overdue return to Boston Folk Club for this fine guitarist & songwriter from the North East of Lincolnshire. The last time, he was part of the terrific blues duo Cootie & The Harpman (with Ken Mayle alais 'Walter Harpman'). That partnership has been dissolved following Ken's move to France, but Dick's still got the blues (well he does live in Grimsby!)

TOM McCONVILLE

MON 8 NOV

One of the country's best fiddle players and not a bad singer either, Tom has played with the cream of the British folk scene over the past 20 odd years. If you haven't seen him since he was part of the fabulous Dab Hand, you're going to find it hard to believe that he's actually got even better!

£4.50 members / £5.50 Visitors

MARK CAMPBELL & PAUL BELLAMY

MON 6 DEC

Two guitars (or fiddle / guitar) two voices, lots of great songs and (unfortunately!) several awful jokes. A visit from this fine duo from Grimsby is always worth coming along to, so do yourself a favour and don't miss them.

Members £3.00 / Visitors £3.50

CHRISTMAS PARTY SINGERS NIGHT

MON 20 DEC

Good grief! Is it really twelve months since the last one? If you've been to one of these before, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't, well there's nothing we can say to help you prepare. There's nearly always a surprise visit from someone we haven't seen for ages (and we're not talking about Santa Claus!) and occasionally, someone sings a song with a connection to Christmas! Despite that, we still usually have a great night and there's free nosh as well!
