BLUES ARTIST PROFILES 1999 - 2003

GEOFF ACHISON & THE SOULDIGGERS - Blues and funk may have originated in the USA thousands of miles from County Victoria in Australia where Geoff began his electrifying journey. Geoff learned his craft from local blues musicians before forming his own band The Souldiggers in 1994. As continents change so do the Souldiggers, two factors remain constant, Geoff's remarkable playing and ablity as a frontman, and the superb backing musicians who make up the Souldiggers, be it in USA (Portland based Souldiggers), Australia or in the UK, when Dave Lennox who has played keyboards with wonderful Hammond overtones for Van Morrison and John Mayall's touring bands, bassist Dave Clarke and Britian's top blues drummer Sam Kelly combine their indivual talents to back guitarist Geoff. This line-up is featured on the band's superb latest CD 'Souldiggin' In The UK'. Opening with some electro-acoustic songs, Geoff's ability is immediately apparent, especially on his version of 'Whippin' Post' made famous by The Allman Brothers. This is followed by the full electric sets featuring the funky Souldiggers, sets include both original songs such as 'Begging Bowl' and classic numbers such as '24 Hours' and Freddie King's 'The Same Thing'. The band's recent appearance at the Spalding Blues Club attracted a capacity audience, and one that knows what they like to hear, here the band received a standing ovation after playing 3 encores, an amazing show that lasted 2 and a half hours, if the band are playing anywhere near you make sure you're in the audience! ~ for further info or to obtain the band's CD's visit The Bottleneck Blues Website.

AFTER MIDNIGHT - Band were formed in 1985, taking their name from one of EC's songs. Their ability to re-create Clapton's electrifying stage performances, really caught the audiences imagination. Guitarist / vocalist Mike Hall not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too! In Classic Clapton guise the band reproduce authentic versions of Slowhand's hits, including 'Wonderful Tonight', 'Crossroads', 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and of course 'Layla' - for more info visit the After Midnight website.

AMOR - (Updated Apr 2003). The band formed by lead guitarist vocalist Jon Amor formerly of The Hoax who disbanded a few years back after achieving great acclaim as the freshest band on the blues scene for many years, it did not take them long to establish a massive following throughout the UK and Europe, and after their sad demise there was a very large gap in the blues scene, until now! Jon has written loads of new numbers, hand picked his fellow band members, from three of the best bands around namely, including, on drums and sampler Wayne Procter (ex Ainsley Lister Band) and Matt Beable Bass Guitar and vocals (ex CBN). The band's music has pushed out the boundaries, as they develop and diversify from traditional 12 bar style blues with sounds that have a more modern feel, there is for instance electronic sampling, but don't let that put you off, there's lots of great guitar work to enjoy and whilst Amor's sound leans towards the rock spectrum, their music remains rooted in the blues, though blues traditionalists may find their 21st century sound challenging! The band released their debut CD in 2001. Their latest album has received many accolades including "With an album as good as this up their sleeves, AMOR can look forward to the year ahead with more than cautious optimism" THE TIMES (4 STARS). For more info visit the Amor website. (old Amor website.)

BEN ANDREWS - Ben has been recognised worldwide for many a year as one of the most important American blues artists. He performs in is usual aggressive style on a multitude of guitars in a variety of styles, but all firmly rooted in that early Delta style of Robert Johnson, Son House and Howlin' Wolf. In an eerie green light Ben Andrews performed one of the most memorable and compelling solo sets seen at Spalding Blues Club in Spring 2000, including his awesome version of 'Gallows Pole'.

ANNIE'S BLUES - Classic acoustic style blues from Chicago to New Orleans, including songs originated by Bessie Smith, Leroy Carr, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters. Featuring Annie on vocals backed by strong boogie woogie / Rhythm & Blues piano from Geoff. As well as the pre war songs, the duo include some more recent jazzy blues numbers.

GWYN ASHTON BAND - Hailing from Australia, Gwyn with his flowing dark hair & well worn Fender Strat, brings memories of Rory Gallagher flooding back. Rock with a blues edge, Blues with the bite of a Dingo - "Fantastic slide technique had everyone gasping. Gut-bucket dirty lowdown blues!" (Blueprint). 'Feel The Heat' when this trio comes to town! Gwyn has recently had a track of this album featured on a 'Classic Rock' magazine CD. October 2000 sees the release of the band's new CD 'Fang It!' which features former Rory Gallagher sidemen Gerry McAvoy (bass) & Brendan O'Neill (drums). The offical launch party takes place at The Borderline on 11 Sept 2000, followed by general release on 23 Oct 2000 on Riverside Records (distribution Apex / BMG). Gwyn & his regular band made a great impact at this year's Colne Festival on Blues Rock night. As well as gigs with his band Gwyn also performs acoustic solo gigs.

ATCHA ACOUSTIC - Trio who have toured Europe during the past 3 years. Their eclectic mix of styles means their music is not for the purists! The driving forces behind the music are Chris Jagger (brother of Mick) on vocals & guitar, Charlie Hart who for many years was the mainstay of Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance on fiddle & accordion & completing the line up is Ben Waters, an outstanding young British boogie woogie & blues pianist.

LONG JOHN BALDRY - Began his musical career in the late 50's playing folk & jazz, before moving into R'n'B. He worked with Blues Incorporated & Cyril Davies's R&B Allstars, before fronting the Hoochie Coochie Men, which included Rod Stewart in its line up. They teamed up again in Steampacket, before John joined Blueslogy, who boasted Elton John on keyboards, then moved on to become a solo artist, performing pop ballads including the number one hit 'Let The Heart Aches Begin' (1967). Long John dropped out of the limelight at the end of the 60's, but has continued to work around the theatres & clubs of Britain & more especially Europe. John has moved back towards his earlier influences of the blues, his last appearance in the county was at the Ritz Theatre in Lincoln a few years back, supporting the Spencer Davis Group, when John performed a well received acoustic solo set.

BABY ISAAC - Scottish blues band - for more info visit the Baby Isaac website.

THE BARCODES - London based trio, sounds of Mose Allison & Jimmy Smith spring to mind - a mellow jazz-blues that really swings! Bob is much in demand as a session musician, he has also worked with Billy Swan, Dino has worked with Sonny Black & The Dukes as well as Larry Garner, Katy Webster, Tutu Jones & Otis Grand. They combine to produce a sound that is laid-back, jazzy & mellow. Their unique fusion of Blues, Rhythm'n'Blues, jazz with hints of soul, stands out on the horizon like a volcanic melting pot of genres, spitting out red-hot rocks of groovy goodness! Recently kicked off the Monday afternoon session on the International Stage at the Great British R&B Festival at Colne, rejuvenating the gathering audience with a massage of the coolest blues grooves, hot Hammond harmonies & pulsating drum rhythms, that put them back in the blues mood ready for another 13 hours of music! ERIC BELL BAND (added Jun 2003) - Ex Thin Lizzy guitarist whose famed guitar solo in the hit single 'Whisky In The Jar' brought him to the attention of the rock world in the early 70's. Since leaving Thin Lizzy soon after that momentus time, Eric has continued to play fronting his own rock / blues band, who have appeared in Lincolnshire on a number of occasions over the years. For more info visit the Eric Bell Band website.

STEVE BENNETT - Steve formerly fronted The Bluesbusters. He has moved away from the pure blues sound of the Bluesbusters days, dropping the Bluesbusters name, & moving towards the brassy sounds of Rhythm & blues. The touring line up now includes drummer Sam M. Kelly (son of Dave Kelly), Dick Hanson (ex Graham Parker & The Rumour as well as playing horns & trumpet on albums by Dave Edmunds, Wreckless Eric & Shakin' Stevens to name but three!), the band also features Andy Pyle who has played bass in Juicy Lucy, Savoy Brown, Blodwyn Pig, The Kinks & with Rod Stewart & Alvin Lee! SONNY BLACK & THE DUKES - This southern based band first appeared in Lincolnshire at Spalding Blues Club nearly 2 years ago, more recently they have played to sell-out audiences in Stamford. Sonny is widely regarded as one of the finest blues guitar players in Britain, he dislikes playing his guitar at ear-ringing volume, his delicate touch & the emotional intesity of his playing stand out! Sonny has a relaxed approach to his music, spontanous jazzy instrumental jams interlink with classic blues songs from the likes of BB King, & with every instrument having an important part to play Sonny is surrounded by a superb band, featuring George Pearson on bass, Dino Coccia (drums) & the latest recruit Bob Haddrell on Hammond sound keyboards, he has replaced original keyboard player Daniel Smith (who left to form his own band, late in 1999). On special occasions they are joined by the Yardbirds harmoncia player Alan Glen. She recorded her first album back in 1975, following a gap of 10 years away from the music business, during which she brought up her family. THE BLUES BAND - A band who have brought the blues to a new audience, fronted by former Manfred Mann vocalist Paul Jones, who also plays great harmonica, he is joined by Tom McGuinness (guitar / vocals) also ex M.Mann & McGuinness Flint, Dave Kelly renowned for his guitar & bottleneck slide playing alongside many of the blues legends, Gary Fletcher was bassist in Country singer Bryan Chalker's band in the 70's, while drummer Rob Townsend set out on his musical career with Leicester based band Family. The band teamed up in 1979 to play just one or two gigs... the rest as they say is history! The band released a live album 'Brassed Up' in 1999, which featured a brass section.

BLUE THE FUSE - Sheffield based blues band, who deliver old & new American & British blues songs with an identity that is uniquely theirs. Their music contains elements of jazz, adding to the air of sophistication, yet Blue The Fuse can rock with the best. Now a 4 piece, featuring Jon (bass / vocals), Theo & Graham (guitars) & Louis (drums), the band have a fine set list, & the Blue The Fuse website was the first blues website we found!

THE BLUES THIEVES - Formed towards the end of 2000, from the remnants of electric Folk Rockers Hoolie. Unable to find a replacement for an emigrating multi-instrumentalist, a change of direction was considered. All three remaining members found they had a long time love of Blues and old-style R&B in common, and a new course was plotted. Singer Tom Winsborough worked for many years on the south coast of England as a Singer/Guitarist in some of the toughest venues in the country. He is known mainly as a folk singer, but his musical taste is much wider than that, covering many genres. He is also becoming known for his taste in shirts, which whilst leaving him looking like an extra in 80's cop show Miami Vice, have given him a definite on-stage image! Since the late 1960s Kip Hodginson's Drum kit has taken him all over the world, and with many styles of music, from Bluegrass to Blues (with Old School and The Blues Devils) and from Rock to 60s music both live and in the studio. Get him on his favourite subject, The Grateful Dead and he's a mine of information. His drumming is never boring, and with a great singing voice too, Kip would be an asset to any band. Bassist Richard Hudson has played in many bands, with many styles, ranging from the Jazz/Pop of Lounge Lizards to frenzied folkies The Blackwater Band, but it had been a dream harboured since his long gone teenage years to play in a blues band. Whilst the band were still talking about their new found direction, impatiently he advertised in the local press for a Blues Guitarist to complete the new line up. No less than seven players answered in the first week, and the first to come along to see us was.... Derbyshire Guitar slinger Graham Jakes is a very unassuming and modest man. He makes no boasts about his playing, letting it do its own talking. Having played with Rock and covers bands in his younger days, he worked on his Blues/Rock style and, crucially, his tone. Some guitarists seem to think it's enough to watch a few videos, have some guitar lessons and splash out on an expensive instrument. But of course, they won't have the feel and tone which Graham has for our music, wringing riffs aplenty from his hot-rodded Strat and custom made Tele.

The band was complete, and galvanised by an eagerness to get out and gig, started to put a set together. Ideas flowed thick and fast, and some rehearsals hardly saw an instrument played as we swapped ideas, flinging CDs and tapes around and generally frothing with enthusiasm!

Several months down the line and we are playing venues in Notts and Derbys. Hopefully we will soon be branching out. Look out for us a venue near you and experience Blues Thieves live, and witness four men running headlong into middle age, playing the music they love. To contact Blues Thieves tel 07761 272843

PHIL BRODIE BAND -Sheffield based this outfit consists of the very respected bass guitarist Gerry Scanlan, Neil Wathey on drums, plus guitar virtuoso Philip Brodie. It is exciting that these 3 talented professional musicians have come together again forming this "power trio" to pay tribute to Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Peter Green and other rock/blues and swing/blues artists. All 3 are former members of the legendary "Bitter Suite" band, which from the late 60s and through the 70s and 80s was Sheffield's most successful and versatile bands, touring all Britain and all of Europe. They released an album and a few singles including "Goodbye America", making a publicity film "Goodbye America" for continental T.V. to promote the record. It was a huge hit in Europe from Portugal to Turkey reaching No.2 in some of the countries. They did masses of work for radio, being very regular guests on Radio Luxembourg, Radio 1, and always on someone's show or doing a disco for Radio 1 Live when of course at the start of the band's career air space for music was very precious. Gerry Scanlan bass/vocals, a very respected musician in the business, was a founder member of Bitter Suite and stayed with them till the end. He then joined the successful band TNT touring Europe and Britain after which he joined The Blues Brother's Band and toured all over the world with them till a few months ago. Neil Wathey on drums started with the Frank White Band before joining Bitter Suite very early 80s he then also joined TNT and from the mid 90s has done session work with successful bands from heavy rock to soul, including The Drifters and Edwin Starr. Phil Brodie, lead guitar/vocals, well Phil was winning talent comps at the age of 15 with his guitar playing and pioneered the heavier music of Cream and Hendrix in Sheffield, he formed the band Love Confusion that toured Britain. He joined Bitter Suite in 1974 and played with the band throughout its brilliant history. He has also toured and played with Dave Berry, Alan Bown to mention a few. Phil is noted as being one of the top guitarists of his style. The 3 masters have sessioned with many famous bands in their long careers, playing very tightly together, giving a powerful sound with tremendous depth which is not often heard with a 3-piece band, and are looking forward to entertaining you soon. For more info visit the Phil Brodie Band website. (running from Jan 2003)

BILL BOURNE - A unique creator of music, who has been described by critics as 'an ageless blues man', 'a national treasure', 'an iconclast', and 'a master folk musician'. An award winning Canadian singer-songwriter, whose songs are anthemic, thought-provoking and inspiring. He grew up in Alberta, his first recognition came in the 80's when he worked with Scotland's Tannahill Weavers, though their confinement to traditional music prompted him to move on to his own material, hence the formation of Bourne & MacLeod and the release of the ground breaking LP 'Dance & Celebrate'. Always a fiercely independent artist and a seemingly tireless touring performer, Bill continues to carve his own distinctive musical niche. With 6 albums of original material Bill has built a repertoire that leaves audiences spellbound. On acoustic guitar, he improvises at will, moving from intensly solid rhythmic grooves to inspiring and imaginative solos, a diverse range of influences emerge from his playing, from African Highlife to Blues, Swing, Gospel, Cajun, Celtic, Aboriginal & Flamenco. ROD CLEMENTS - The run of north-eastern music at Baileys continues in October with the visit of his Lindisfarne colleague Rod Clements. Probably best known as the writer of "Meet Me On The Corner" (Lindisfarne's debut chart single), Rod has worked with some of the great names in rock, folk and blues music over the last thirty years. A truly talented player of the acoustic guitar and slide dobro, his CV reads like a "Who's Who" of the best players, singers and songwriters from the UK - Alan Hull, Bert Jansch, Prelude, Michael Chapman, Rab Noakes, Ralph McTell, Thea Gilmore and Catherine Tickell are just some of the distinguished names with whom Rod has recorded and appeared.
Following a successful tour of the USA this summer as one-third of a stripped down acoustic version of Lindisfarne, we are happy to welcome Rod and his slide guitar to Grimsby in between tour dates with Nigel Stonier, with whom Rod has written the majority of the songs from the last two Lindisfarne albums. Rod will be playing some of these for us tonight, along with more bluesey and rootsy material from his own critically acclaimed solo albums "One Track Mind" and "Stamping Ground". And, who knows, maybe a chance to hear the aforementioned "Meet Me On The Corner" in an acoustic style, very different from the version recorded by the band in 1972. You can find out more from Rod's website:

MIKE COOPER - A long time stalwart of the British blues scene, starting his career in the mid 60's as a solo blues / slide player and one of a handful of acoustic players who pioneered the British Blues boom, playing alongside such blues legends as Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Bukka White, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed. His 1969 album 'Oh Really!?' was widely acclaimed as one of the best acoustic blues albums of the period. In the early 70's Mike's music took a new direction, switching from pure blues to free jazz, collaborating with jazz, improvising and avant-garde musicians such as Dudu Pakwana (South Africa), Zimbabwean composer Mike Gibbs and British sax player Mike Osbourne. By the late 70's Mike was an established musician on the free-improvised music scene working with the London Musicians Collective. A musician who plays both Western experimental and Roots music including Hawaiian lap-steel guitar playing, which led to his collaboration with French slide guitarist Cyril Lefebvre in the Uptown Hawaiians. Now resident in Italy, Mike tours UK venues less often than he used to, he will be performing at a number of venues in the Spring of 2001, some of which will include performing live music for classic black and white silent films, which has proven not only a rich and rewarding way of combining different styles but also a way of seducing people into listening to unfamiliar genres. His current programme has taken him to festivals around the world. For more info visit website.

EMILY DRUCE - Released her highly acclaimed debut CD 'The Guilt Trip' in 1999, an offering that stands alongside any re-issued albums from the 60's folk-blues boom. A fine mixture of county blues classics and originals, good funky acoustic guitar playing & strong vocals - her off stage quiet & self-effacing manner is a complete contrast to her blues belting style on stage. Influences include Big Bill Broozy, Memphis Minnie, Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder, also Sleepy John Estes and Bob Dylan. Her profile was heightened recently following an appearance at the Sidmouth Festival & the inclusion of her version of the Skip James song 'I'm So Glad' on the FRoots magazine sampler CD, as well as appearances at the Burnley Blues Festival. This exciting young performer looks set to become a big attraction on the national blues circuit soon. Emily releases her second CD 'New Day' in May 2002, with a tour to promote its release. KENT DUCHAINE - With Spilsby apparently not on his latest tour itinerary Kent's Lincolnshire fans will still able to see this remarkable live performer, who lives the blues he plays, at Spalding Blues Club. Inspired by the British Invasion, to play guitar, it was Eric Clapton's versions of Robert Johnson songs that led him (& many other people!) to the blues. He later met & played with the old bluesman Johnny Shines (who had actually played with Robert Johnson). Kent is joined onstage tonight by the ever faithful 'Leadbessie' (his National Steel Guitar). Catch up with Kent's News & Tour dates at his new website.

ARTHUR EBELING - Some friends introduced us to the unique music of Dutch musician Arthur a while back, via a tape of his 1995 album 'Piggy Dog', after they were 'knocked out' by a live performance at one of the fringe gigs at the Colne Blues Festival in 1998. Arthur well known in Holland for his awesome guitar playing & great guitar sound describes his original style as "rhythm & blues in a jazzy sauce". Arthur had a hit single in Holland with 'Maria' a song from his album 'Simple Man' in 1994, which brought him recognition for his work in various countries in Europe. ( ... though we don't recall the UK being amongst them, sadly!). Great original songs, masterful guitar work, wry lyrics & charismatic delivery have made him a fine ambassador of the Dutch music scene ~ that perhaps we don't hear a great deal of in the UK! He has toured the UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Russia & USA, in his homeland he has opened for artists such as Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Ann Peebles & Joan Armatrading. Described by 'The New Revue' as one of the most remarkable musicians in Holland, Arthur starting writing his own songs at the age of 10, though he had been playing guitar since he was 8 and formed his own band at 9! He played with various Dutch bands including The Capsones, Big Shot and Rocking Guns. Following an accident he started with Jump Dicky! Jump! playing rock'n'roll, laced with jazz, this sound developed naturally towards the swinging rhythm'n'blues sound of New Orleans, a city that he now visits regularly. His guitar playing has been influenced by players such as Chet Atkins, Cliff Gallup, Eddie Cochran and later also Brian Setzer, whilst another big influence is Ray Charles, his favourite musician. Arthur will be writing some more new songs during August & Sept 2000, how do we know this, well he writes many of his songs whilst on the road, especially whilst he's touring in Britain! For more information & tour dates visit the Arthur Ebeling website.

This is a rare opportunity to see an artist of Mark's calibre performing in such a venue.

PERRY FOSTER - One of Britain's top British acoustic bluesmen. Perry developed a fascination for the blues back in the 50's after hearing Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy and Terry and McGee on the radio at the tender age of 12. An immediate thirst for Delta Blues followed, with Foster joining the London blues clique in the 1960's. He played with the likes of Howling Wolf, Rev. Gary Davis and Sleepy John Estes, and even acted as minder (and clothes buyer) for the legendary blues musician Sonny Boy Williamson who gave him a 12-hole Hohner harmonica which Perry still uses in uses in his live shows today. Perry Foster's place in the annals of blues history is without precedence. As well as playing with the greats, Perry has encouraged young musicians and singers over the years, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant recalls "I was turned onto the blues by a guy named Perry Foster", Plant was a member of Foster's Delta Blues Band, as was keyboard player Chris Wood who went on to play in another great band Traffic. More recently he encouraged Connie Lush to sing the blues, she went on to be voted British Female Blues Singer of the Year on 5 occasions! Foster and Robert Plant recently teamed up again, Perry supporting Plant's modern day band on a national tour. Universally recognised as one of the finest home-grown, authentic blues merchants England has ever produced, Foster's sound today is as true to its Louisiana, Texan and Mississippi roots as it was when he was mixing it with the legendary elders of the genre. A regular at numerous blues festivals, including Burnley where Perry starred in a TV documentary about the Lancashire Festival, and the Great British Rhythm'n'Blues Festival at Colne where he has for many years organised events on the acoustic stage. One of the true characters of the British music scene, Foster's appetite for the blues has been undiminished by time, with his gritty, bluesy voice and driving slide work on 12-string and resonator guitar memories of the good and great bluesmen of a bygone era will be conjured up at Perry's shows.

(Colne 2001). Look at your local venue to see where Nigel might play his harp next! They rapidly became stars in their own right, winning new fans wherever they played! Their debut CD 'Sound Like This' was followed by an appearance on the Jools Holland show. For a time it looked like the band could go all the way to the top, their self produced third album was brilliant, but it wasn't to be. After 4 years the band split, & James started writing material with a more soulful bias & began to develop a new, larger line-up. Following a fortuitous encounter at a gig in South Wales in 1991, James Hunter has performed dozens of shows alongside Van Morrison as part of Morrison's Rhythm & Blues Revue. Many have seen James playing guitar & duetting with 'Van The Man' alongside such luminaries as John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells & Jimmy Witherspoon. When working with his own line-up the sets feature highly soulful original songs interwoven with sizzling interpretations of classic rhythm & blues cuts - all of which make for an exhilrating show - particularly coupled with James' formidable prowess as a singer guitarist & frontman. The band's sound is formed around guitar, double bass, drums, tenor & baritone sax, his latest release 'Kick It Around' is a gifted mixture of uptempo songs with lots of pumping funky rhythms & graceful dreamy ballads. An amazing act that Dave at the Woodman brings back to the area, with the help of sponsors Spire Taxis of Louth.

JOHN HUTCHINSON - Ex David Bowie guitarist / singer songwriter Spider John Hutchinson is back on the road in 2002, performing his very individual brand of jazz-blues. Even before his spell with Bowie, John had already played with bands, supporting some of the early rock and roll artists, including Little Richard and Gene Vincent. His first major success came when he had a solo hit single in Sweden, with the Dylan song 'It Ain't Me Babe' - the Swedes regarded him as 'Sweden's Donovan'. He returned to England in 1966, meeting the then unknown Bowie who asked him to join 'David Bowie & The Buzz' who had a residency at The Marquee. The band when on to make TV and live appearances across the UK. Then followed a spell in Canada, before John returned to play with Bowie's new band, the acoustic act Feathers. Shortly after David & John recorded the original version of 'Space Oddity' then went their seperate ways. David once again called on Hutch to join his 'Spiders From Mars' as 12 string guitarist for his Aladdin Sane tours of the USA, Japan and UK. After this Hutch formed his own band 'Hutch and It's Easy' which attracted some record company interest, but it was his next band 'American Echoes' which had more success, including Dave Lee Travis's BBC Radio One Record of The Week in 1979, with their debut single 'Ooh Las Vegas'. The 80's & 90's found John 'working for a living' but he continued to write songs and performed regularly, including successful tours of Holland & Germany in 2001. He has recently released a solo EP 'Solo You Can Hear Me' and he appears in our area in Feb 2002.

FREDDY JAMES BAND (added Jun 2003) - For more info about this South Yorks based band visit the Freddy James Band website.

JOHN JAMES - Britain's premier ragtime guitarist, John has an ability to entertain with a combination of humour & musicianship that has contributed to his enormous public appeal, which has brought an otherwise esoteric guitar style to a wider audience. John has recorded more than 15 albums & guested on TV & radio shows, & he has performed solo concerts around the world. He also performed at The First Stamford Folk & Blues Guitar Festival in 1998.

"THE REVEREND" RICHARD JOHN - Described as "the best one-man blues band this country has created since the late Duster Bennett" - BBC Radio Suffolk, (me thinks, has Ray Stubbs been to Suffolk yet!) Still Richard, who plays guitar, harp on a neckrack & stomp box sounds to be a fine act in his own right, & his album 'Love In The Blues' is available from Indie-pendent Blues priced £10 + p&p.

PAUL JONES & DAVE KELLY - Harmonica supremo Paul Jones & slide guitarist Dave Kelly, renowned by many as the best slide guitarist the UK has ever produced, join forces as a duo, playing a mildly electric, but mostly acoustic set of blues standards, Blues Band hits & own compositions. Paul was the lead singer with 60's group Manfred Mann, whilst Dave has played & recorded with blues greats such as Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker & Son House. This intimate show features the duo telling some of the stories behind the blues as well as playing the music they both love so much.

WIZZ JONES with DOUG B. SMITH - Wizz has been a major force on the European acoustic music scene for over 30 years. He was among the first wave of young guitar heroeswho emerged, perhaps as a result of the skiffle boom & the folk revival in Britain during the late 50's. Having learned much from Long John Baldry and Davy Graham whilst playing in the coffee bars of London's Soho, Wizz followed the time honoured trail of the itinerant busker, travelling extensively throughout Europe. He returned with a unique guitar style, an eclectic repertoire & "a right hand worthy of Big Bill Broonzy"! ~ Wizz is joined by Doug B. Smith for dates early in 2001, Doug is described by John Crosby of 'Time Out' as being a "superb acoustic folk & blues guitarist & singer, his brilliant support at Roy Rogers' recent London gig (Borderline Oct 2000) signals the genesis of a major new acoustic talent".

THE J.T. BAND - Powerful blues rock trio, who include Rory Gallagher numbers, Texas style blues by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter & The Fabulous Thunderbirds, as well as some bluesy versions of pop songs by the likes of Squeeze. They have supported Nine Below Zero, & Wilko Johnson at The Walkern Blues Club. Band members have worked with musicians from Climax Blues Band, & Quiver (of Sutherland Brothers fame). Look out for some great slide guitar from Chris.

EDDIE JUKE BAND - During the 80's and early 90's Eddie Juke was the lead singer with The Accelerators, later he fronted the Fabulous T-Bones who regularly played at the club in the late 90's. More recently the band have performed with American blues musician Blind Mississippi Morris (whom Eddie met by chance in 1995) at larger venues and festivals including the Great British R'n'B Festival at Colne. Eddie has a terrific stage presence, an engaging personality, a voice as black as asphalt and is a mean Harp player. Such a combination of talents, custom made for singing the Blues, is rare in the UK and very often people at his gigs at times find it hard to believe he is not an American on tour in the UK. Their album featuring original songs written by Eddie, 'Sure Enuff' includes a whole range of styles loosely categorised as the blues with several tracks recorded in Memphis with guest musicians, the remainder were recorded back in the UK with regular band members, though the American feel runs throughout the album. For more info visit the Eddie Juke website where you can find all the latest information regarding up and coming gigs and tours, both in the UK, and the USA. Eddie Juke will once again be touring the UK with Blind Mississippi Morris in July.

JONATHAN KALB BAND - ''...his guitar playing reveals an unassuming rhythmic fluency that supports the intensity of his solo lines beautifully. Raw and graceful by turns, his solo lines do not so much fill the space as use it with economy and intelligence. At their best the results are transcendent.'' -Proctor Lippincott, New York Times . Jonathan Kalb is an expressive multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter whose career has already spanned 25 years taking him from the streets of San Francisco through the gospel churches of Harlem to some of the biggest clubs, halls and major coliseums in the U.S.A.

The list of artists he has worked with is both indicative of the quality of Jonathan as a performer and of the respect he commands amongst these great names: -One year playing and touring the U.S.A. with the Steve Miller Band. -USA tour with Evelyn Champagne King as the band leader, leading to appearances on national TV shows, ''Midnight Special'' and ''Rock Concert''. -Backing up blues and rock artists including Lightning Hopkins, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley & Mike Bloomfield. -Credited by Jimi Hendrix for having inspired his initial experiments with fuzztones. In concert with the O'Jays, Isley Brothers and Johnny Copeland among others. His music, although fundamentally blues based, draws from many elements of funk, rock and jazz all crafted together to form a rich R n' B sound that has a universal appeal. Jonathan has been on tour in Europe for the last 10 years playing in England, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Scandinavia. His work in Europe includes recording projects and appearances in many major festivals and clubs. His blending of traditional atmospheres with contemporary self-penned material has a unique and distinctive sound that rarely fails to intrigue an audience. His CD 'Autumn Blue' was recorded live at solo gigs during Autumn 1999 and captures the style and atmosphere of King Rollo's 'one man and his guitar against the rest of world' approach to his music. He teaches blues and fingerstyle techniques to novice and advanced guitar students wishing to increase their range, and has presented popularly received workshops during many of his sell-out concert visits, including the University of Bath and Bath Spa University.

In November 2000 he mounted a spectacular stage show 'John Doe - A Story of the Blues' which, as a feature finale of the Hull Literature Festival, was a sell-out performance at Hull Truck Theatre. KRISTINA OLSEN & PETER GRAYLING - Kristina is one of the most entertaining and compelling performers on the international folk circuit. A fine instrumentalist (acoustic guitar / steel bodied slide guitar / sax / concertina and piano) as well as a powerful songwriter with a big bluesy voice. Her mix of string songs in the troubadour tradition, some jazz inspired sounds and powerful bottleneck blues was well as her hilarious storytelling - makes for a great gig. Kristina was one of the performers who appeared at the White Hart in Ufford in the early - mid 90's, when that venue was putting on regular gigs! This we think is her first return to the area since those days. On this occasion she will be accompanied by Peter Grayling, a fine classical player who has turned out to be a great improviser with a solid grounding in folk styles, blues and rock'n'roll. The cellist bends that classical technique to his own ends, plucking and bowing a solid bottom line and taking soaring solos in unexpected places. Peter enhances Kristina's style and there is a real empathy between the two performers that makes their shows special.

"This bottle this blues comes in must be marked 'West Coast Malt' ... smooth & mature but with a deadly kick" (Henry Ayrton, BBC Northern Blues). The band's debut album 'Blues On A Bottle' has reached 20 countries world wide, 2001 saw the release of the band's long awaited follow up to that remarkable CD, 'Shadowplay' that features original 10 tracks, many of which feature in the band's live shows.

TREVOR BURTON BAND - Led by Trevor, formerly guitarist with The Move, this dynamic 5 piece band fuse blues and rock. One of the top acts appearing at the Skegness Rock & Blues Festival in 2001 and 2002, the band released their debut CD 'Blue Moons' in 1999. There was a blue moon when Trevor was born, this rare occurance happens when there are two full moons in a calender month, even rarer is when this occurs twice in a year, which has happened just 6 times in the last 200 years, this occured in January and March 1999, hence the CD title. Its once in a blue moon you see a band this good, don't miss them!

MARTIN TRIMBLE & OUTSIDE HELP - Latest! - We understand from Martin that that Outside Help have offically split up as of November 2001 - Band history ~ Formerly Crossfire, this rising young blues band from Lincolnshire have recently parted company with their former drummer, & have featured former Hoax drummer Mark Barrett & Rob Flanagan on sticks whilst seeking a replacement. The band completely overhauled their set earlier in the year, with many new songs, including 5 original numbers as well as blues classics by the likes of Freddie King, BB King, Buddy Guy & a fiery rendition of the Ray Charles' 'What I'd Say'. The band recently appeared at a Roadhouse session at the Colne Festival, & we understand they will be will be playing some support slots for the Blues Band in the Autumn. (details not currently available). The band hope to announce the name of their new regular drummer shortly .... look out for details of exciting new developments in the Autumn of 2000. Young Lincolnshire drummer Sam Saunders featured in their line up in Oct - Nov 2001 for the band's final few gigs.

MARTIN TRIMBLE - After the split of 'Martin Trimble and Outside Help', Martin is now working on original material with a new 3-piece line up including Gary Rudd on bass and Natasha Allan(17) on drums. The new material will probably end up sounding like a mixture of The White Stripes/Zeppelin/Zappa/Hendrix and Buddy Guy, so come and check us out in the New Year. For further info email the following address for anything related to the band or music - nu_bluesmusic@hotmail.com

PARKERS ALIBI - Formerly the Monty Turnbull band, this four piece band recently supported Jeff Beck at Shepherd's Bush Empire. Though not exclusively an out & out blues act, their songs being influenced by the American West Coast Country Rock sound & Allman Brothers, as Monty Turnbull the band released a CD entitled 'Misfits & Fools'. Described in 'Blueprint' as "the new icons of the British Blues scene" - the band fronted by guitarist & vocalist Ian Parker - who caught the eye of Sherman Robertson following the band's appearance on the bill at the first Hastings Blues Festival ~ "you ain't great yet boy, but you got what it takes & you'll get there" .... "I only ever said that about one other white guy & that was Stevie Ray Vaughan - listen up boy - I'm serious" & perhaps we all ought to take note of the American masters words, because you never know where the next star's coming from! Their music is fresh with inventive interpretations of soulful material as well as original songs with a 21st century feel, drawing heavily on the band's blues/roots influences. After seeing the band in action at the Spalding Blues Club we can see just why Sherman was so impressed. Great guitar, coupled with powerful & emotive vocals from Ian (reminiscent of Ian Siegal), backed by a highly impressive band, they took the club by storm! They have recently released a 5 track CD 'Beer Goggles' available at gigs or by mail order (priced £6.89 incl. p&p) from Nightmare Management - Box 911, Stourbridge. RICK PAYNE - Top West Country guitarist Rick is described as a master of slide guitar, & plays as eclectic mix of contemporary & traditional blues coupled with raw & gritty vocals. A master craftsman at interpreting the classic styles of the old blues masters such as Robert Johnson & Sleepy John Estes. His live concerts have been likened to sitting in with Ry Cooder or John Hammond, he recorded the CD 'Live at the Folk House' in Bristol, his hometown in late 1998. For further info visit Rick Paynes website & Rick's on-line tuition for finger picking blues & slide.

DAVE PEABODY & GYPSY DAVE SMITH - Blues duo who have recently returned from one of the major events on the international guitar scene, The Dobrofest in Trnava, Slovakia. Combining their vocal & instrumental skills, they play authentic downhome blues, from an extensive repertoire, as well as some original pieces performed in traditional style, with great fingerpicking from Dave & superb slide work from Gypsy Dave. Add to this, Dave's characteristic bon homie & story telling ability, based on his great knowledge of the history of the blues & Gypsy Dave's rich deep vocals, & you have all the ingredients for a great night of blues.

DAVE PEABODY & BRENDAN POWER - New Zealander Brendan Power & British blues stalwart Dave Peabody have taken the classic blues format & repackaged it for the 21st century. Both great performers in their own right, together they are electrifying, reflecting influences from blues, country, jazz & Celtic music. Dave has recorded with many artists, including some of America's blues legends, including Honey Boy Edwards & Charlie Musselwhite & was voted UK acoustic blues artist of the year in 1995. Brendon is one of the top session harmonica players, working with artists such as Sting, Mary Black, John Williams & James Galway. He has released a number of instrumental albums which have virtually redefined the role of harmonica playing in traditional music. He has always retained his love & affinity for playing straight ahead, no nonsense blues & with Dave he finds the perfect outlet for that expression.

KELLY JOE PHELPS - American Acoustic guitarist who lets his playing do the talking. He plays original songs in a roots / blues style, on acoustic lap slide guitar. His latest album 'Shine Eyed Mister Zen' was chosen by many top reviewers as one of 1999's top albums. You can find out more about the man & his guitars on the Kelly Joe Phelps website.

MICK PINI BAND - Mick has been described as "a natural successor to the likes of Peter Green & Eric Clapton"! (Speakout Magazine). Formed in Leicester in 1984, the band released their first album 'Mick Wildman Pini', which featured Paul Jones guesting on vocals, in 1989 on the Blue Horizon label, selling 20,000 copies. They released the long awaited follow-up 'Big Boss Man' in 1995, & the band have just released their new CD aptly titled 'Blues Gonna Be My Way' (see review!) produced by Mike Vernon who also guests on percussion! A little known fact is that Mick was one of the instigators behind the Fizgig gig guide, "just do it" was his suggestion, so we did & here we are still! Mick rarely plays in our area now, as he resides in Germany. The band regularly tour throughout Europe where the blues is still cool! Email - Moving.music@btinternet.com .

*Latest news from Mick (Aug 2002) is that he has just done an album with Ex original bass player from Little Feat Captain Beefheart and The Mothers of Invention, Roy Estrada.and with Jimmy Carl Black the Drummer from Mothers of Invention and Captain Beefheart. The album which features 4 of Mick's songs will be released Oct15.02. THE PRODUCERS - The Producers, were voted 'Top British Blues Band' by readers of Blueprint magazine in 1999. The band will shortly release a new 'Live' CD, which will be the last to feature harmonica player Hugh Budden, who left the band in summer 2000. Hugh had been with the band 9 years. The band originally had a keyboard player, & much of Hugh's harp work reflected the old keyboard sections on their excellent songs. The band's talented line-up features Harry Skinner (guitar & vocals), Dave Saunders (bass) & Brian Wright on drums, & will feature guests & fellow musicians until a suitable replacement for Hugh is found. The band released 2 CD's towards the end of 1998, 'Somewhere Down The Line' & a new recording of their 1992 tape 'Escape From Muswell Hell' which features one of our favourite live Producers tracks, 'I Sing The Blues'. Tracks from 'Somewhere ...' have been played on Atlanta Radio, Georgia (USA), with audiences of WRFG 89.3FM phoning in wanting more, perhaps blues lovers over here should do the same with our local stations who seem to think that the blues is miserable music for sad lonely people, rather than a rhythm of life! Check out the bands website at: http://www.bluesuk.dircon.co.uk

REDEYEBAND - Hard giggin' blues rock trio from Cambridgeshire, featuring talented young guitarist Danny Bryant. Formed in 1999, in 2 years the band had played an amazing 300 gigs. Before long Danny was practising up to 10 hours a day, and has now in addition to playing at pubs around Cambridgeshire, has supported major artists, including .... Walter Trout! To find out more about the band and other gigs visit the Redeyeband website.

The venue also has its own website at: http://www.the-clinton.mcmail.com

MICHAEL ROACH - Acoustic bluesman who has a unique ability to turn his concerts into an informal gathering of friends new & old, with his relaxed yet informative approach, sensitive guitar playing & moving songs both traditional, & original material written about this generation. Though inspired by the likes of John Jackson, he has been greatly moved by the times when he played to the homeless people living in shelters, for free! Indeed his 2 CD's 'Ain't Got Me No Home' & 'The Blinds Of Life' reflect this.

(RICHARD EVERITT'S) ROCKET '88 - A new band is rising from the Ipswich music scene, including some names familiar to Lincolnshire audiences! Formed basically to fill the void left on the Suffolk blues circuit, with the demise of the 'Big' blues band Built For Comfort. Musicians from 3 bands, The Fretz, Built For Comfort & King Bizkit. The line features Mark Parker (double bass), Jason Scopes (guitar), Duane Bullet (drums) all from the Fretz, Adam Clarkson (guitar), Dave Wright (baritone sax), Kevin Wells (Tenor Sax) & Giles Wright (trumpet) from Built For Comfort, the band is fronted by Richard Everitt (vocals) the leader of King Bizkit. RUDY ROTTA BAND - British debut tour by top Italian blues band. The reputation of this guitar killer reached the ears of American blues lovers, after storming tours across Europe, since then Rudy has regularly taken the blues back to the States. Subtly combining a modern style with blues roots with rocky funk-soul. Rudy & his band (which also features Hammond organ player Pippo Guarnera) have truly proved themselves to be the cream of Euro blues bands, now it is the turn of Britain to experience the Rudy phenomenon. Their debut tour has been set up by Terry from Connie Lush & Blues Shouter, who was particularly impressed after seeing the band playing in Europe. Rudy has performed with the likes of Luther Allison & John Mayall, & shared the bill with Etta James, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, & Taj Mahal (in front of 20,000 fans!). Don't miss his first appearance in our area.

SHADES OF BLUE - A 4 piece band performing a solid base of blues, with a little R & B & Rock & Roll thrown in! Inspired by blues originals like Elmore James, BB King, & Muddy Waters & the 60's / 70's blues boom.

LEE SANKEY & IAN SIEGAL - Ian Siegal and Lee Sankey, the first guests in 2001 at the Spalding Blues Club are part of a new generation of blues performers, both still relatively young, Ian's guitar playing and a vocal style, which "ranges from the soaring passions of James Brown & Otis Redding to the gravelly depths of Howlin' Wolf" (Blueprint) won him many fans in his hometown of Nottingham and further afield. Lee is regarded principally as a virtuoso harmonica player, his first musical love was Hip Hop but he discovered the blues after seeing a gig by James Hunter & decided there and then to play the blues harp, and how, Lee winning the National Blues Harmonica Championship in 1993! Another inspiration in Lee's career has been B.B. King, after a concert by this blues maestro Lee took up the guitar & his live shows nowadays feature both instruments. Together these two remarkable individuals combine their considerable musical talents in a show that is both unique and eclectic in style, beyond the blues there will be hints of jazz and even hip hop. Visit the Lee Sankey Website.

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR BAND - Fronted by the remarkable young guitarist Joanne, who began playing the blues in the late 90's when just 13 years old. Influenced early on by a video of Stevie Ray Vaughan playing live, and blues great Albert Collins, when hearing her play it's not difficult to imagine these late guitar heroes reaching down from Heaven to touch her soul! With her husky vocals, naturally suited to the blues, and her immense guitar sound, Joanne is immediately convincing by way of her 'no-nonsense' and genuinely gifted style. She has recently signed a recording deal with the Artist Network, the revolutionary record and media company set up by Dave Stewart (ex Eurythmics), and is scheduled to play high profile gigs with BB King and Jimmie Vaughan in 2002. "Last year I heard something I thought I would never hear ... a British white girl playing blues guitar so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end" (Dave Stewart). Joanne is backed by a talented band featuring Roger Inniss on bass (Climax Blues Band / Elkie Brooks / Mick Taylor), Jamie Little on drums (Ruby Turner / Steve Gibbons / Dana Gillespie) and another talented newcomer Phil Kingston on piano and Hammond. While there are talented young musicians like Joanne who want to play the blues coming through the ranks, Robert J, Muddy, Howling Wolf, Alexis, Cyril, Albert, Stevie et all can rest in the knowledge that the blues still lives, and here in England! Visit the Joanne Shaw Taylor Band website.

In the mid 80's Bill formed 'The XL's' and as guitarist/vocalist he and the band appeared with Bonnie Raitt, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughn and became Georgias hottest band. In the early 90's he disbanded the XL's and collaborated with singer Liane Webb on the 'Real Time' album which first bought him to the attention of U.K listeners having received much airplay both here and the rest of the world. He then turned his attention to the original delta blues that had influenced him from the start,Blind Willie McTell, Charley Patton, Blind Blake etc forming a band to play this material as well as his own self written and extremely popular songs. This band is the 'Ringtail Rounders' and brings us right up to date. Bill also featured on Buchanon's Polydor record release 'In the Beginning.'

In the mid 1980s Bill Sheffield formed 'The XL's' and as a guitarist/vocalist he and the band appeared with Bonnie Raitt, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Steve Ray Vaughn and became Georgia's hottest band, releasing a very successful self titled album. In the early 1990s, Bill disbanded the XL's and collaborated with singer Liane Webb on the 'Real Time' album which first brought him to the attention of U.K. listeners. He then turned his attention to the original delta blues that had influenced him from the start. He formed a band called the 'Ringtail Rounders' to play this material and also his own self written and extremely popular songs.

In February/March 2002 Bill Sheffield toured England and Scotland for the first time. He was accompanied by the best blues musicians Britain had to offer and most of the shows sold out completely. IAN SIEGAL BAND - 1998 was the most successful year so far in Ian's 10 year musical career, touring Europe, supporting the Otis Redding Jr. Band in USA, & playing at the prestigious Mustique Blues Festival. But probably the biggest gig of all was at London's Shepherds Bush Empire supporting Jimmie Vaughan, where his performance 'blew the audience away' as Jimmie said 'next time I come over I'll be supporting this fella'. Ian launched his new CD 'Yo edjumikashun' in his home town of Nottingham in 1999, before the very people who set him on the road to stardom!

SIX FINGERED COUSIN - Intense & uncompromising urban blues / post-punk country rock. Visceral & challenging - music for the dispossessed. Not to be missed!

SKELETON CREW - Since their appearance at the 1997 Skegness Rock & Blues Festival The Crew have been making more excursions to our area. They play a rocky style of blues that has Texan influences. The trio released 'Wood, Wire & Skin' in 1995. The band have plenty of musical experience behind them, John featured on Titanic's hit 70's single 'Sultana' (an early influence on Ed T's musical development - which finds me typing up Fizgig webpages, over 20 years later!) - Simon Crumley's bass solo's are becoming legendary. 'Driven by the blues - Steered by the soul' - an exceptional band not to be missed!

CLIFF STOCKER & PAUL LUCKER - Cliff Stocker the amazing frontman and founder member of the Lancashire based blues band Slack Alice teams up with keyboard player Paul Lucker who is a current member of the band for a special night of acoustic orientated blues, jazzy and rootsy songs that have influenced Cliff throughout his long musical career during which he has played with John Lee Hooker and other top names, and some of the stories behind those songs. A singer whose gravel toned voice oozes the blues, Cliff also plays harmonica and acoustic guitar, alongside him talented keyboard player Paul Lucker provides superb backing. Both are excellent song writers in their own right, some of these songs will feature in this special set, as well as songs from Warren Zevon, Stevie Winwood, etc. Regularly touring nationally and internationally as Slack Alice, who are one of the favourite acts at the Great British R'n'B Festival at Colne, this will be a very rare opportunity to see another side of this fabulous band at a small venue, and who knows they may bring along some special guests!

SLACK ALICE - Originally formed in the 70's, the band reformed in 1995. The exceptional vocals of frontman Cliff Stocker, not one but 2 great guitar players & a fine rhythm section combine to make Slack Alice one of the finest blues rock outfits this side of the Atlantic. First on stage at the 1997 Colne Festival, the band's set was rarely in our opinion bettered during the weekend! The band currently have 2 CD albums out the most recent 'Just The Blues' is the follow up to 'Broken Dreams' which features a number of great songs originally written in the 70's but due to circumstances not released. Highly recommended by Fizgig! - The band release their third CD 'Somewhere Between ... Nashville & Chicago ..." produced by Jerry Donohue in summer of 2002, and have a extensive programme of gigs coming up over the coming months, including an appearance at the Embassy Centre in Skegness (Nov 30th). BYTHER SMITH - Byther Smith is a true 'Living Legend' of the Chicago blues scene and during his long lasting career he worked with the greatest of the Chicago blues artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Otis Rush. Born in Monticello, Mississippi on April 17, 1933 young Byther Smith got his first musical experiences with gospel music, a music that he returned to at various stages of his career. As a teenager Byther moved to Arizona, working on a cattle ranch and playing with a country & western band at weekends. In 1957 he moved to Chicago at the advice of his cousin, the legendary J.B. Lenoir. He began gigging and taking guitar lessons from Robert Lockwood and Hubert Sumlin presumably on the basis that if you're going to get a guitar teacher you might as well get the best. In the early 1960's Byther Smith was working the clubs on guitar and bass both as a leader and in various bands as sideman. A group of highly prized recordings were made resulting in 45's on labels such as Bea & Baby, Cruise and Apex. In 1965 it was back to gospel with the Gospel Travellers for a time. In the 1970's he spent five years in the house band at Theresa's Tavern, which often meant playing with Junior Wells. 1979 found Byther Smith determined to make it under his own name and a steady stream of coast to coast gigging and touring commenced. He made several recordings and his releases, "Addressing the nation with the blues" (JSP) and "Housefire" and "I'm a mad man" (both on Bullseye), were very successful. Recently Byther released two CD's ("Mississippi Kid" and "All Night Long") on Delmark Records. During the years Byther Smith has toured all over the world. In Europe several times, among others as a member of the Chicago Blues Festival. Byther Smith did several very successful European tours between Nov '94 and Sept '99. During these tours he performed in Holland, Belgium, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden and the UK. During these tours in headlined the Moulin Blues Festival in Ospel (NL), the Handzame Blues Festival in Belgium and Le Nuit De Blues in Sarreguemines (F). In November 2000 Byther made recordings for a new CD (Smitty's Blues) that is released on Black and Tan Records in March 2001. His next european tour is scheduled for April 2002.

BYTHER SMITH - Chicago blues singer & guitarist, born in Mississippi in 1932, he moved to Chicago & made his mark on the city's club scene, working with many of the greats including Otis Rush, Muddy Waters & Junior Wells. Chicago Reader music critic David Whiteis describes 'Smitty' as having "an ominous, almost primal intensity to his sound that can be spellbinding". Byther's songs reflect the rough-&-tumble life he's led; his early career as a boxer, the grief of personal losses & his struggle to make ends meet. His gospel-drenched voice & stinging guitar have earned him cult status, so be prepared for a night that might just break your heart.

DANIEL SMITH BLUES BAND - Daniel first shot to prominence working with Sonny Black & The Dukes, his keyboard playing gaining rave reviews. He has since formed his own band whose sound is based around driving boogie woogie & an authentic downhome blues piano style, reflecting influences of Albert Ammons, Memphis Slim, Dr John & Otis Spann to Jools Holland. 'Awesome on keyboards ... the best boogie piano heard in a long time ... with his jazzy vocals, this guy is seriously talented' (Blueprint) - definitely! - The band released their first CD 'Southside Boogie' in 2000. His songs have been covered by Bonnie Raitt & John Mayall ('Mail Order Mystics') & others. Chris has re-emerged in the 90's with a series of great albums including 'Up On The Lowdown' 'Happier Blue' & 'Small Revelations'. Roy usually is to be found playing at the improbably (but true!) named Titty Twister in Bangkok He plays a powerful acoustic slide style of blues, mixing his own songs with covers of classic songs from such pioneers as Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt. In the sixties he moved north and by the way of Wisconsin he eventually ended up in Minneapolis, where he became one of the leading figures in the blues scene of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Percy Strother has a tremendous "power" compared to e.g. Muddy Waters. His music is a mix-ture of blues, rhythm & blues and Memphis-soul. He was musically inspired by the likes of Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and also Wilson Pickett. Percy Strother could be heard as guest on the CD "Ready to go" by RJ Mischo & Kid Morgan Blues Band. In 1992 Blue Loon released Percy's debut-CD "A good woman is hard to find". This CD features own material and has got very positive reactions and reviews by a number of renowned blues magazines (Juke Blues, Living Blues, Block, Blues & Rhythm). The titelsong of the CD was rewarded with a Living Blues Award for the best Bluessong of 1992 and the entire album was mentioned as "runner-up" in the category Best Blues album. In the same year he was featured by both Block Magazine (NL) and Blues & Rhythm (UK). In October '93 he did his first European tour in Holland and Belgium during which he did a live show for the national Dutch radio. In June '94 he did his second tour and he played in Hol- land, Germany, Belgium and France. During his third European tour in April 1995 did he at- tend the prestigious Burnley Blues Festival (UK). Percy Strother released his second CD "The Highway is my Home" in March 1995 on Black Magic Records. The CD got rave reviews in several international blues magazines like Soul Bag (France) and Living Blues (USA). In May 1996 Percy did a four week tour in Europe and he performed in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. In Belgium he played at the very prestigious Spring Blues Festival in Ecaussinnes. In October '96 Percy Strother played at the Lisieux Blues Festival in Lisieux (F) and did a few club shows in Holland and Belgium. In November 1997 Percy played the Lucerne Blues Festival (Luzern/CH) and the Bluesparade (Peer/B). On his last European tour ( April '98) Percy played among others in the 100 Club in London (UK) and in the New Morning in Paris (F). In April '98 Percy recorded a new CD (Home at Last) for Black and Tan Records. "L'excellence de son CD 'The Highway Is My Home' n'est pas un accident. Percy Strother l'a prouvé une heure durant, avec une économie de moyens qui force le respect. Totalement invisti dans sa musique, son set est intense et prenant. C'est le blues dans toute sa force et sa beauté intériorisée" Soul Bag Saturday

RAY STUBBS & HIS AMAZING ONE MAN BLUES BAND - Ray was inspired after seeing American One-Man blues performer Dr Isiah Ross back in the 70's. A one-man band conjures images of a musician with a big bass drum on his back and ropes from arms etc, however Ray sits behind a multitude of instruments, and other devices that usually wouldn't be instruments these being offered a far more exciting 'life' in showbiz as the scrap heap beckoned! As well as 6 & 12 string plus slide guitars Ray also plays harmonica, kazoosaphone, bass & snare drums, cymbals, washboard, jugs etc. A great live performer, Ray puts his all into every performance as he fires up Europe's largest one-man band into full swing, add to the marvellous instrumentation, a hypnotic rhymtic beat and a voice that could have come straight from the Mississippi, rather than the North East of England and you have one of the most unique acts currently working on the British music scene! Much of his material is taken from the 20's & 30's era. As well as being an outstanding musician, Ray has also had many acting parts for TV plays, to find out more about these and his music and a forthcoming TV programme about the man and his band, visit the Ray Stubbs website.

Kim "Hiding" Wikman
Mr "Hiding" Wikman is a quiet bluesman who only speaks through his guitar "Flying Finn",but when he speaks the walls even listen. Many people are amazed about the strangeness of Hiding, coming from the backwoods of Nedervetil and working in a hole with concrete and steel when he is not touring.

Niko Riippa
"Shaking" Niko uses also a "Flying Finn"-guitar and being the filosopher of the band he reads a lot. He is the adopted son of Louisiana Red and is the only member living in Helsinki. One day LA Red will get him a bungalow in Ghana.

Teamed up with Jim Condie (who appeared at Spilsby with Mose Scarlett) in top Scottish blues band The Dexters. People may have enjoyed his singing without realising the source, Tam sung Big Jazza's (Robbie Coltrane) parts in the TV series 'Tutti Fruiti'. He also played a major part in the film epic 'Braveheart'. A rare visitor to the East Midlands, even as an acoustic performer, Tam returns to the area in May 2000 for a gig, this time with his Shoestring Band. Tam fronted his big band, for an even rarer appearance by Tam White's Celtic Connection, at the 1999 Colne Festival.

The original trio, who featured a second guitarist Bob, released debut cassette album 'Gone For A Peccadillo' back in 1994. Much of their material is steeped in the roots of the blues, from the 20's & 30's. The third incarnation of the band, featuring Keith Carter (harmonica) released their debut CD entitled 'Crossing The Tracks' in 2000, it features 10 tracks, a mix of traditional & old country blues songs by artists such as Big Bill Broonzy & Robert Johnson, & 4 original songs that retain the same feel. The Witham Delta Boys starred on the acoustic stage at the 2000 Burnley Blues Festival & later appeared at Jim's Cafe in Colne at the Great British R&B Festival. For more info visit the Witham Delta Boys webpages on the IUMA website.

WIZARDS OF BORDEAUX - The Wizards of Bordeaux formed in October 2001 by bassist Mike Mager and keyboard wizard Nick Skorecki.

They both felt that the time was right to stretch their musical muscles and indulge their long established love of Rhythm & Blues. Realising that there was a dearth of local R & B bands, they decided to form one of their own. The initial idea was to perform on Sundays only & build up their own following (giving credibility to the fact that Sunday afternoon gigs are fast becoming the first choice for very many local music fans and venues).

Recruiting a drummer was easy - as Mike knew Paul (Chip) Hanley from his Fahrenheit and Goose days and was also a former Rumble Band colleague. From the outset, Chip expressed a very keen desire to join the fledgling wizards.

Filling the guitarist slot was more problematic - as nearly all of the local guitar players that Mike & Nick knew - were already playing in bands - and very few of those had a real love of the Blues! It was Chip who suggested they contact Duncan (Dunc) Peddie - and old school friend and former Native Tongue guitarist. They auditioned Dunc - and haven't looked back since.

The Wizards took their show onto the road in December 2001, and play an eclectic mix of jazz-tinged R & B, including tunes from Jimmy Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Jonny Lang and Jools Holland amongst more main stream blues offerings such as favourites from BB and Albert King.

The Wizards are currently spreading the blues word around Lincolnshire and are looking to venture further afield in the future, perhaps to include a festival or two.

RUTH WYAND - Guitarist, singer/songwriter Ruth Wyand draws on American roots music to frame her lyrical gift and demonstrate her strengths as an accomplished guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. As an Americana artist she weaves traditional and contemporary folk, blues, swing and traditional country into a colourfully rhythmic musical quilt. Ruth plays all over the world on a variety of stages from book stores to festival stages with acts such as Little Feat, Dr. John, Ellis Paul, Les Sampou and John Hammond to coffeehouses and folk festivals to the streets of Paris. She was selected as a People's Choice Award winner 1998 by The Philadelphia Folk Factory, she is the president of The Garden State Songwriter's Association and has written, produced and played on several folk, country and blues artist's CD's in New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia and Nashville. The first thing that strikes the listener is her powerful guitar playing. Her finger style technique with a variety of tunings alone is a whole show but then she switches gears and moves into a smokin' swing or a low down slide. Her vocal accompaniment is at once languid and athletic and the songs she writes reflect her humorous personality and compassionate nature. Ruth Wyand's musical integrity stands out. She is a true original. The variety she offers in her shows will fascinate American roots music lovers world-wide. In 2001 Ruth releases her new CD, "Distant Drums" ~ she says 'I sing on it, play on it (acoustic, electric guitar & dobro), tried to dance on it but it broke! The album features special guests on percusions, drums, bass and back up vocals. We understand the CD can be purchased from cdbaby.com/ruthwyand or amazon.com or via her web site at www.ruthwyand.com. CDbaby.com has song samples on it for your listening pleasure.
