Monday 8th January

SALLY IRONMONGER & BRIAN CARTER

With nearly 20 years experience of performing and writing, Sally and Brian are the first guests upstairs at The Eagle in 2018. The evening's set will include songs from their three albums and more, songs about trips to the seaside to the darker side of the waterfront, shipyards and prostitutes, as well as amusing self-deprecating songs and protest anthems.

Winners of the 2016 Milkmaid Folk Song Competition with a song entitled 'Metalwork', Dave Wilson of Lincolnshire's Winter Wilson says "A good song needs a killer line and Sally Ironmonger & Brian Carter know how to write a killer line. Personal songs that link into a much bigger picture, sung with fine voice and able accompaniment from Brian Carter. I've had the pleasure of listening to and performing alongside Sally and Brian and it's been a treat." (Nov 2016)

An absolute one off, Sally and Brian have a quirky and distinctive style, with Brian's unusual and accomplished guitar technique the perfect accompaniment to Sally's unique voice.

Enhanced by their love of their job, their live performances are very entertaining whilst their songs will make you laugh, or cry, or just think.

FAKE THACKRAY

When Fake Thackray, aka John Watterson first saw and met Jake Thackray in his local folk club on the Isle of Man in 1975, a striking impression was made. Following Jake's passing in 2002, John decided Jake's superb and humorous songs were too good to be lost, and so he not only learnt more of them, in a mid-life crisis he decided to give up his day job and bring Jake's wonderful songs to not only Jake's old audiences, but to those who had not seen or heard the legendary performer live. Since then he has performed the songs of Jake Thackray at festivals, concerts, clubs, after dinner venues and – most specially – to members of Jake's family.

Jake, a one off, a true craftsman of the English language wrote songs that were exquisitely funny, often satirical and incisive, irreverent or witty and gloriously un-PC, and sometimes all of these at the same time. The legacy of scores of songs he left continues to delight audiences of all ages today.

John, a talented guitarist and vocalist has an obvious appreciation and love of Jake's music, he also has an engaging quality that makes you want to listen to his performances, which are a celebration of the man that was Jake Thackray, and a highly entertaining, heartfelt tribute to one of the finest songwriters of the 20th century.

He has toured this show with Fairport Convention on their 6 week nation-wide tour, and has performed 20 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, earning several 4 star reviews. He has also been delighted to support Ralph McTell, Richard Digance, Vin Garbutt and many more of his music heroes.

Whist John was reseaching to write Jake's biography, he discovered a number of songs that Jake had never officially recorded, these 'lost' gems have been recorded on an acclaimed new CD, 'The LOST Will and Testament of Jake Thackray' by John Watterson.

If you saw Jake performing 'live' in clubs and theatres in his heyday, or on TV (on shows such as 'That's Life') or indeed if you have not heard his music before, you can come and enjoy Jake's songs once again, performed by Fake Thackray, upstairs at The Eagle.
