McHardy Roll of Honour -
Their Name Liveth For Ever More

The following table lists the details of the McHardys who fell in the Great War, World War II, and Other Wars and Conflicts. It also contains some individuals who although not of the surname McHardy, had a McHardy mother. Where better or additional information was available, I have enhanced the details contained on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website.

Mike wrote "We would be interested to know if you have any information about Fred McHardy who served with 247 Motor Boat Coy and sadly lost his life on the 21st. February 1945.

If you can help it would be appreciated as we have had an enquiry from Ron Cruickshank who's father James Cruickshank died on the same day whilst serving with 247.

We are particularly interested because we are in the process of adding to the Roll of Honour of the Special Boat Service which will be included within the Allied Special Forces Memorial Grove at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire.

We hope that you can help".

Ian Slatter wrote to me in an email about Sidney Alexander Farquharson McHardy.

........... I stumbled across your web site while surfing the web under Vadum, Denmark.

Your site gives details of the above who is buried in Vadum Cemetery.  My father P/O Albert Lawrence Slatter was a member of the crew of the same aircraft, who died on 15 October 1944, and is buried alongside Sydney McHardy in Vadum Cemetery, which contains the graves of 29 British airmen who died in the Aalborg area of Denmark between 1940 and 1944.

The aircraft they flew in was a Halifax bomber and they were shot down near Vadum whilst returning from a mine laying expedition in the Kattegat.  All of the crew were killed, except one, another Canadian, who was spirited away  by local people before the Germans found him. Believe it or not I have become friends with a farmer who was at the scene, and have been over to Denmark several times to visit the graves.  He had actually got bits of the aircraft in his garage which he presented me with.  I am also in touch with the family of another crew member P/O Reginald Herbert Porter.  His family lived not too far from Melbourne in Yorkshire and his daughter Jean can remember the crew coming to their house for tea on several occasions.

Vadum Cemetery Denmark

A local historian has written a book giving details of all the aircaft which came down in the region and there is a chapter on this aircraft.  After the crash the Germans took the bodies away and buried them in an unmarked grave and there is a sad but fascinating story about how the Danes came to locate them, and give them a Christian burial, when the Germans surrendered at the end of the war.

On 5 May every year (Danish Liberation Day) the Danes hold a service at the graveside similar to our Armistice Day services which I have attended on a couple of occasions.

Yours sincerely

Ian Slatter
