HistoryINDEX CANTORUM is unashamedly a ‘list of singers’ who, on occasion, take a break from professional commitments, musical or otherwise, to sing purely for pleasure. The repertoire that the group performs spans several centuries, and includes familiar favourites and lesser-known pieces, often specially edited from original sources. Founded in 1988, INDEX CANTORUM started with concerts in the London Churches of St Paul’s Covent Garden and St Paul’s Deptford, and has become a regular guest of St Patrick's Church, Soho Square. More recently INDEX CANTORUM has performed in Winchester, giving concerts in St Lawrence Church, and singing in the Cathedral for Evensongs, Complines, and in 1999 for Choral Vespers, marking the King Alfred 1100 anniversary. In 2003 INDEX CANTORUM celebrated its 15th anniversary with a performance of Tallis 40 part motet 'Spem in Alium'. Last year's engagements included a concert as part of the Winchester celebration of 450th anniversary of the marriage of Philip II Spain to Mary Tudor. In 2005, INDEX CANTORUM shall be singing in Winchester Cathedral for Choral Evensong on Saturday 8th Jan 2005, and for a lunchtime concert, May 3rd 2005.
