Tonight’s concert sets out to paint a musical canvass of works devoted to the texts of evening services in the Catholic and Anglican Churches.  In its origins the monastic liturgical ‘day’ of 10 services began with First Vespers and Compline the previous night, and then the day ended with second Vespers.  After the Reformation the Anglican Church combined Vespers and Compline to form Evensong.  The programme in each half loosely follows the order of service in Vespers and Compline respectively, with Evensong being specially represented by the inclusion of typical psalms and anthems heard today.
